I f**king love this record. Listened to 3x last night after a too long absence. It may not top the first 6 Ozzy, or the 3 Dio, but it is still a fine album. Good review as you captured the essence.

Headless Cross > this
but this one is still pretty damn good and certainly overlooked. Opener and t/t are two of the best non-Ozzy sabbath songs.

pretty good album. martin is definitely solid but didn't blow me away. very dio-lite but i do get that this was written was ray gillen so maybe he gets better later on. t/t goes really hard, love that gloomy atmosphere, very classic sabbath. the shining and ancient warrior are also solid fun songs. bit too hook dependent and hard rock on the rest. not too much wrong but not too much that stands out. worth a jam for sure.

“The shining” and especially the t/t are two of the best later era sabbath songs no question. Album is worth is almost entirely for the t/t alone. But it sandwiches some REALLY corny 80’s stuff that's fun but also incredibly cheesy. I like it tho

yeah definitely agree, seems our sabbath opinions are pretty close lol. excited to jam headless cross, seems almost everyone agrees it’s the best martin album

The 2-CD deluxe edition from 2010 contains the Gillen demos as disc 2, if you are interested
Plus the disc 1 is the most dynamic version of the album available that I know of (more dynamic than the original CD too!), so it's a win-win

yeah i checked out some of the gillen songs as comparison. he was quite good, fits the album better for sure. really cool something like that exists.
