Clash: two classic studio albums, some other excellent-to-good stuff, and Cut the Crap.
Pistols: one fucking awesome studio album and a ton of irrelevant miscellaneous releases.

The Clash win, but I'll give the Sex Pistols some solid credit.

a lot of the backlash is down to their manufactured image and peoples resentment at them overshadowing far better, more genuine bands of the era, as an album this is just mediocre at best but not the worst shit ever or anything



i only mentioned the clash because people always try to use them as an example of a more credible and artistic band from that time by conveniently forgetting all the shitty music they released and how much their image was based on phoney sloganeering and posturing as well

I can get that, but what people also tend to forget is that a lot of those "truly genuine bands" wouldn't have ever existed if it weren't for the Pistols... (at least in the UK)



Also phoney sloganeering? Putting some thought in how to convey a message and having some subtlety seems far more intelligent to me than just outright stating the obvious (which is the problem I have with some of the more well-respected American bands in the 80's).

it just sounds lame rather than dangerous these days

I can see why this album is hailed as one of the greatest albums of all time, but i don't think what they were doing at the time was any different to that of anyone else. Its just that sex pistols took everything to the extreme, and then some. Brilliant album, though sometimes the riffs can get a bit boring. Not that there would be any ballads on here.
