*DISGUSTED LOOK AT THE RATING* What is this?

When I first heard the record, I honestly hated it. I love agressive rock Muse (songs like Stockholm Syndrome) and really disliked the slow pace they've taken along with the orchestral grand presentation. Well, after listening to it again, understanding what they were going for and just listen to the music, I like it. The songs are catchy, good hooks and the musicianship, production and scope of the album is HUGE. I think too many people review records for bands comparing it to their past records and achievements by simply dismissing new material they just don't like as much as their older stuff. This album is not the Muse I prefer or would have rather heard, but the album is fantastic and doesn't deserve such a low score if listened to honestly without any pre-conditions or opinions.

I agree, their older work is instantly likeable. I really didn't know what the hell to think of this when I first heard it, until I realized it's a "sit-down, relax, and listen all the way through" kind of album. It's like a movie in a way.

If The Resistance was a movie, it would be The Phantom Menace. Origin of Symmetry would be A New Hope.

I've never seen a movie that I could equate to "The Resistance". If only this had been released when American Idiot stirred up all that "rock-opera" shit, it might already have a screenwriter. It's chronicled well enough to be the musical accompaniment to the DVD.

He means that The Resistance sucks (much like The Phantom Menace) while Origin of Symmetry is rulesauce (much like A New Hope).
Clever, no?

I know what he means, unfortunately, since the genius of this record seems to go unnoticed, even when it comes to many people who love it.

What are you, Glenn Beck?

I like the way you refer to him as an object.

Muse are very talented, but have gotten progressively worse (I say that even though I rated Black Holes And Revelations a 4.5).

Worse in what respect? Because it seems they can still adapt to any sound, compose fluidly, and play fantastic live shows.

Well, if you're a fan of their earlier work like Origin of Symmetry then you'd notice that they recycled guitar riffs and synthesizers from it on this album. They are fantastic live, but that has nothing to do with their progression in terms of songwriting. They have some fantastic songs on this album, but it's a regression when compared to masterpieces like Absolution. I still do think this is a great album though, and the title track is fantastic, but it seems typical of Muse. Their other songs which are undoubtedly ambitious (symphony) aren't necessarily good just because they adapt to a different style.

At the expense of seeming overly objective, I can understand why you would rate it a 4.5 just as much as I can understand why someone would rate it a 2.5.

There are a few lyrical connections with Symmetry, and I don't think they re-used thoses riffs for lack of originality because then...where the hell did the Exogenesis series come from? I think they have just gotten progressively different, and I don't use that excuse for all of my favorite bands. For example I used to love Green Day, but it's pretty obvious what little talent and overall interest in the art was involved in their evolution. But when it comes to Muse, the sheer determination and passion in all of their music can't be denied. I really hate Black Holes but I still think it's a necessary part of their discography that led them to this, a magnum opus of sorts.

Meh..."Eurasia" is a sure Matt Bellamy theme song, but the Exogenesis is obviously trying to say something beyond that.

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you on this one. I think this is Muse at their most unoriginal point in time. The symphony didn't even bring anything extremely enjoyable to the table in my opinion. I think Black Holes was fantastic and diverse; whereas this seems like a compilation of old ideas less intensified. Even MK Ultra seems anti-climatic.

I think this is an entirely different table. Anyway, to each his own, I need to get to bed.
