Having weekends off is great. I got to travel back to my hometown this past weekend and visit some old friends and catch up with their lives. Saturday night I stopped over at my friend Eric’s apartment to shoot the *** with him for the first time in a long time. We Didn’t really do much, ended up going on you tube and showing each other bands we have gotten into recently. Sometime during this band swap I asked Eric, “Hey, you still into Opeth?” He shrugged and stated in as blandly and unexcited as possible, “Yeah, I guess I really like them.” It seemed as though there was more to it, so I asked him what the hell he was talking about. After about a fifteen second incoherent mumble, I interrupted and said, “Look Eric, this is what I think about Opeth. Their songs are good, but they’re good in a way that isn’t fun to listen to. It’s like, ’that riff is good and creative, but I don’t necessarily want to listen to it.” Eric looked puzzled for a few seconds, then slowly opened his mouth. “Yeah, that’s pretty much it.”
Your review lost any credibility with this unnecessary paragraph. My biggest problem with this review is that you rant throughout the entire review. Your logic on the riffing is retarded as sin and your negative claims about the songs are childish. I love Opeth obivously and if this review was written by someone who wasn't a tool, I wouldn't have anything but good things to sayt about the reviewer. However, you were obviously beaten senseless by an Opeth fan and you needed to vent. Have a neg and FAIL!

"Heavy Metal's most overrated album by Heavy Metal's most overrated band."
Hardly. They get a lot of praise on this site fo' sho', but there are bands that are much more overrated in the genre.

Consider the things you aren't too happy about as parts of the music. These odd things that are happening reveal the deceptive bleakness of Blackwater Park.
Harvest's chords are dissonant because it's not what you think it's about. It may be relaxing to listen to, but it's a song about death.
Dirge for November's soft, sad intro is the prelude to the suicide described in the rest of the song. You can imagine why the deep, double-tracked growls were used during the actual act of suicide and the soft, fading guitar part is used as the character is slowly dying. Akerfeldt can subtly twist normal definitions of musical themes into something else.
If you think a little bit beyond the normal comfort zone of music, you'll get a better idea of what Opeth do in their compositions. To non-metal listeners, death growls will scare them away, but Opeth use them in hard, heavy parts with building tension, such as Drapery Falls, 5:36. This is my analysis of Opeth, based on my musical background. I listened to Blackwater Park only two nights ago, and I never forget a listen through Blackwater Park.
This challenge is still not won, but it isn't lost on you, either. You've found what's going on, but don't quite fully understand it yet, and it turns you off. To get my drift, listen really closely to Death Whispered a Lullaby, since that is a soft song. Is it necessarily a happy song although it's soft? No. Widen your perception just a bit. You're almost there.
lolololololololololol
I love it. U DONT UNDERSTAND THIS BAND U DONT KNOW WAT THERE DOING SO U CANT SAY THERE BAD OR BORING TO LISTEN TO CUZ U DONT UNDERSTAND BECUZ U DONT KNOW WAT THERE DOING.
Well, even if the band's intentions are to bore the shit out of everybody... that doesn't make them some infalliable, all-pleasing force of elegance in the metal industry that is above criticism or dislike.
Sorry to piss on the campfire. Carry on.

| | | No, a joke review is something like this (a real "review" from amazon.com):
"Heh, this Opeth band calls itself Death metal, will you guys don't know what real death metal is.
For true death metal from Scandanavia check out: Unearth, Atreyu, Bleeding Through, and Avenged Sevenfold. "
Aside from the fact that the above review and its author should be expelled from the site (vote inappropriate if you ever see it), that is the real definition of a joke review. (None of those bands are death metal or Scandinavian, and he claims to "know" what death metal is.)

Review reads too much like a Jerry Seinfeld impersonation. And what's the deal with those +2 minute boring riffs? Do you have a watch?

Tis a bold thing you did to give Opeth such a low rating.
