I've now gone through this whole album three times today. Time, Money, Brain Damage, and Eclipse are all amazing songs. The only reason that this doesn't get a 5/5 is because On the Run doesn't do anything for me.

As usual, a classy review. In fact Med, it's probably the best one I've read on this site. My only gripe is that it wasn't longer!

As for DSOTM - my third fav floyd album behind Animals and The Wall.

It seems like no one likes this album the best out of all of Pink Floyds albums. The same goes for me, I prefer 'Piper' over this but as of now I think I've been listening to this more than any other Floyd album that I own.

I think The Dark Side of the Moon, is a good album, worthy of four out of five stars. It may have been their height as a group, yes, but their lyrical height, without a doubt didn't come till 1975-1979, especially with Animals. With that being said, I do think The Dark Side of the Moon is very overrated, and is talked about way too much. Musically, both Animals and Wish You Were Here are lightyears better. You listen to the solos in The Dark Side of the Moon, and then listen to the guitar in 'Dogs' and 'Pigs (Three Different Ones)'. Not only is the music better in the subsequent albums, the lyrics are so much better, it's not even funny. Don't get me wrong, it's a good album, but it's my 5th or 6th favorite

1. Animals

2. The Wall

3. The Piper at the Gates of Dawn

4. Wish You Were Here

5. The Dark Side of the Moon

6. The Final CutThis Message Edited On 03.02.06

Fifth, I somewhat agree with you. I like Animals the most, followed by the Wall, but then (I guess I'm weird) its probably The Division Bell, Wish You Were Here, Darkside, then Momentary Lapse...

I don't think it's overrated, it's just that it's such a universally accepted album, that the magic wears off for some people.

Every sound effect just adds to the concept of each song - atmosphere. People are still impressed today, not because they're stoned, but how well-composed, refined, perfect the album is. It's not a stoner jam session, and the Floyd weren't under the influence when they made this.

Oh, and it's not just hippies who love it. Maybe you didn't notice, oh of course you didn't, you're just making stupid assumptions, but the concept of the album is how grim, short, greedy, and dull life is or can be. Not really hippy-like, is it?
It was way too Avant Garde. The clock sounds, bells, noises that were pointless.
I'd accept that if it were true, but avant-garde? Avant-garde doesn't just imply that its "music" made up of random noises but also entails that its also music that is listened to by a small social and elitist minority. Pink Floyd is one of the best-selling, highest-engrossing acts of all time. This album is one of the top selling albums ever. They have constant radioplay. They have loads of merchandise. These guys are nowheres near avant-garde.

Even then, the songs arrangements are relatively basic, the melodies are extremely catchy, and the vocals aren't really all that ambiguous. They have a heavy blues element to their sound. These basic descriptions run contrary to the general definition of "avant garde".
. I know thats stereotypical, but c'mon, if the hippies didn't love it so much, would it really be popular? more than likely not.
um...this album was released in the 1973. Hippie culture died out in 1969. They are completely different genres and scenes. This Message Edited On 03.28.06This Message Edited On 03.28.06This Message Edited On 03.28.06
that is very hippie like, first off.
well? care to explain?
And never said they were stoned, but the audience then was stoned.
How do you know that?
I merely raised a question asking people to consider the possibility that if the hippie people did not put so much emphasis on it, then maybe it would not have been as good as people rate it.
Once again, this album is not associated with hippies. In fact this album was released in 1973 just as the majority of American society and culture was shifting politcially back to the right, sobering up from the radical 60s. If anything, just as many people considered the general opposite of hippies listened to this album.
Now that I think about it, maybe people only like it today because they grew up with the emphasis on how good it was.
Well I was introduced to this album through my parents, but then never forced me open it. In fact I used to hate it, despite knowing how popular it is.

Regardless, I think you underestimate the intelligence and rationality of mass society.
In which case, they do not look at the actual creativity and skill, but at its popularity just so they can join a discussion....hmmm
So? Why do you care? This Message Edited On 03.28.06
