It might sound weird, but those are the albums that will require time to get into, because there's more form and more structure. The albums that seem to be more flowing and freeform actually require less time to get into because you can latch onto a few random moments from each song and have it appeal more instantly.

I think they should rehearse and work on those compositions more. It's boring, and I know they like to have fun with their music, but I still think they benefit from it.

Great review. I have to agree with Portnoy's odd spoken word vocals. They have always been extremely cheesy. I just got the album last night and, so far, I'm really enjoying it.

Good point, however, I still feel I've given them ample amounts of attention each and I still can't see them as a song-oriented band ever. I still prefer their chaotic nature with such albums as Metropolis: Scenes from a Memory and Train of Thought (which was borderline song-oriented).

I understand them trying to add a heavier edge to the music, but if they had an outside producer I'm sure he would have either cut those vocals out or made him do it again in a way that wasn't terrible.

Not likely. That was their label forcing a sound and direction on the band. If the band got their own producer (Terry Brown of Rush and Fates Warning fame would be great) that they wanted it would be a different story.

I feel like I've heard lots of parts on this album before on their other albums (yes I know on the Shattered Fortress it's intentional). But on other songs it just seems a bit recycled.

There was NOTHING new in this album. I am so disappointed I could puke. Every song has a base in another DT song, sometimes so clearly the same that you wonder if they even bothered to score a new song or just change the name on the top of their old sheet music.
Too much has been recycled as cracksinthepavement pointed out. I've clearly heard everything on this album before. That sucks.
I think this band peaked with Systematic Chaos...maybe they've lost their magic?

Well... to put it plain & simply, this album blew my fucking socks off. WAY better than what I was expecting it to be, it's my Album of 2009 atm, I thought Swoon was a shoe in... but DT had other ideas. The Best Of Times is one of DT's best songs, & John Petrucci did one of his (IMO) best solos... so emotional yet so technical. BC&SL is right up with Images & Words for me... both such incredible albums

A nightmare to Remember is such a dark sounding song in some parts, its hard to believe that DT wrote it. The Shattered Fortress is my current favorite and its a great way to end the AA suite. Also, loving the killer solo at the end of The Best of Times.

Really? I find myself skipping over The Shattered Fortress when listening to the album. At first I thought it was sorta cool that parts from the whole AA suite made a cameo appearance but the song is driven by those parts it feels. There just isn't enough new music in the song for me to like it. It just feels like the pieced together pieces from old songs and tried to pass them off as a new one.
