this is album is quite bad, and this review is pretty f'in good. Nice job Mr. Downer. It seems they just rehashed all the bullshit from 'American Idiot' and play to it in force on this album. I've streamed it in full a few times from their myspace and I still just don't, well, get it. It's utter shit, and I enjoyed 'American Idiot' as well + the other releases.

by massive departure he means more pretentious. maybe?

"how is this a massive departure from American Idiot? it's just a bloated version of that album"
btw -- ^ ya, it is. I agree. How? It's totally not in any possible way a departure from 'American Idiot'

I actually enjoyed this album. Thought it was very catchy, and the vocals were fairly surprising. Billy Joe kept some raspiness to his voice, while showing some skill.
Although, I should say that this album did not sound like Green Day at all. If this were an entirely different band, I bet this album would be getting good comments..GOOD, not great.
I agree with thinking that the sound of old Green Day is dead, but I would be surprised if this trio didn't come out with another album.

When I first heard this album, I really wanted to like it. A majority of the songs are very infectious, and Billie Joe's scream on "Horseshoes and Handgrenades" is gold. I'm at odds with what to think of this album, though...it's overblown pretension seems horrifyingly confused, and I absolute loathe it in that aspect.
Whatever. I pretty much agree with this review; I was going to write my own review for this, talking about how American Idiot was pretty much my first proper album (which, somehow, opened me to bands like Radiohead, Pixies, pretty much all the good stuff out there), and I feel somewhat indebted to Green Day for doing so...however, this is an absolute disappointment. American Idiot wasn't anywhere near perfect, but it has nostalgia value coupled with good melody and memorable lyrics.
But Mr. Downer seems to have stolen my thoughts away from me. Congratulations.

Scary, isn't it?
I had a look at your list of album ratings, and a great number of them are similar to my own.

If this were an entirely different band, I bet this album would be getting good comments
probably not because:
a) nobody would care about it if it was from a different band
b) nobody would have any nostalgic feelings towards the band and they wouldn't be so forgiving

Know Your Enemy is a horrible, horrible song.
My hatred for all of Green Day's work from this decade knows no bounds.
Except Minority...

Fantastic review, spot on. This album sucks the big one, i really struggled to get through the whole thing.

The album is way better than what it has been given credit for.

Amazing review. Really enjoyed reading it, wish i could pos it. I won't be checking to this out, and the only chance of me listening to it is if my iPod runs out of batteries and I am forced to listen to the radio, which we all kow will feature 1/3, still 6 songs, of this album.

It's not that bad. I think the fact that they have had to rip off so many of their own songs, as well as material from bands like the Who and ACDC is indicative of some major problems facing this band.
Clearly they're out of ideas musically, and Billy Joe's lyrical star has fallen.
Armstrong's political understanding is even less now than it was when he wrote American Idiot, which took some doing.

Another sputnik staff review that leans too heavily in the 'career review' category than the 'album review' category. Proof: American Idiot is mentioned 10 times in this review. While I agree with a lot of what you said about this album (the one it's supposed to be a review for...), review this album, not American Idiot. The fact that another one of their albums is mentioned TEN times in a review for a DIFFERENT album is just plain stupid...sorry.
21st Century Breakdown’s general sound is rooted firmly in the 20th century (and features few to no breakdowns).
Please clarify, is this ignorance or just a bad pun?
21st Century Breakdown cannot sustain itself.
That should have been your summery quote, it's dead on.

I appreciate the comedy.
Why is your soundoff rated differently than your review?

kitsch, I'm sorry it just isn't what you want to think it is. Mostly, people like you are the reason it sucks in the first place.

There are a load of idiots on this site who think that the question asked at the bottom of a review reads "Do you agree with this review?"

That's bullshit TNY, today's standards for "boring and too long" usually constitute no more than a single ten sentence paragraph. This isn't long at all considering literature as a whole, this is excruciatingly short.

100% agree. If something is too long or "Boring" to read, admit that it's your own failing for being too lazy to finish what you start. I do, but people fuss if they have to read anything these days. Probably.
