Strange, I grew into, and then out of, Opeth.

Idunno. All their stuff just goes on forever. Whenever I listen to them, I tend to find my attention drawn to a band with more consistent energy (such as In Mourning).

To be honest, if you look at my album ratings you will find I rank Opeth very highly and personally think this is nowhere near as good as the majority of their material.

I have always maintained the belief that drumming is the only element of music that matters when it comes to broadly characterizing it into the genre of metal.

Actually now that I'm looking at it, it doesn't really make much sense...

Very well written and good for you for writing a review which offers a completely different viewpoint. But, no way is this a 2.5. I'm not saying it should be a 5 or even a 4.5 or heck even a 4 (although that's the score I'd probably give to it). But, 2.5 come on. I think you've given it a lower score than you perhaps would've done simply to contrast other people's opinions. I was a bit underawed at the beginning and was wondering what all the fuss was about, but while I may not regard it as highly as some on here I think it's a really good album.

It's so different to any other release...I think it's just a breath of fresh air in a time where every band tries to be more brutal than the other. 2.5 suggests average. But this surely is everything but average because it's not your average bog standard metal cd.

It's a shame that this album attracts only the metal community because it spans so many other genres. Anyone with refined taste in music would find this album at least interesting, which as I gather from the review I think you did. As for the passion, I don't really know. It's not really something I look out for in albums!!

oh Astrer...yeah I did too tbh. Personally, I think it's the vocals that mostly determine what genre of metal a band is. Cynic is quite hard to classify but it's quite proggy with a heavier feel to it.

I wouldn't say it's god damn stupid. At little short-sighted and pretentious maybe, a tad presumptuous perhaps. But it's still based mostly on a personal opinion that I backed up with a review.
