its a vicious music geek cycle That's right I guess. But I wouldn't consider myself a geek. I've never played WoW or CS, all I use internet for is music and sports sites. And yeah I check out facebook once in awhile.. anyway this is off the topic now. Eleanor Rigby is truly great.

are we all actually talking about the same review? where does it compare it to "irrelevant eras of music" or something like that? the review essentially says that it probably was the absolute masterpiece back then, but now when looking back, it lost much of its greatness, also because the techniques used have long ago become outdated - it just uses the two examples of the technicality of metal and the lyrical sensibility of some indie songwriters, but it doesn't really compare it to those genres.
I agree with the review in some way, only not that drastically. It's a bit like an old special effects movie. I do really adore many of their albums before this, as they were just plain bass/guitar/drums stuff with some of the greatest melodies they've ever written, and there's nothing that can grow old with those, just like one of those awesome old black and white movies a la Casablanca, that don't use any trickery. But here, the experimentations (or the "special effects" if you want so) just aren't as fresh anymore (except for Tomorrow Never Knows) - the same is true of Sgt. Pepper as well, btw - only later on the White album they've perfected that style and turned it into an everlasting piece of music.
it's nevertheless a truly great album.

Old special effects movie can be just as relevant today and be seen to have their own style moden production just can't capture anymore.

yeah, but most of them look just ridiculous. and there are really great 60s "special effects" albums as well (The United States of America for example, or Pink Floyd's debut album, or The White album that I've already mentioned)

this thread alarms me because of how many posters are just completely off the mark
it doesn't matter how old music is. nor do dated production values matter, musicianship, or so called "old" song structures or chord progressions, etc.
and you certainly can't compare it to a movie. its like saying a great painting is no longer just as great because you can now take a digital picture of the same thing which is more rich and vibrant and true to life
that has NOTHING to do with anything. and how far recording or music has evolved has nothing to do with this album. period. also, the bands and records most people mention itt as "better" then Revolver wouldn't even exist without this album or the Beatles. its just fact! This Message Edited On 12.04.08

well.... i'm not really at contention with the effects used on this album. some could call them dated I suppose, I prefer to see it as "antiquated" but that just differing terms to try and justify it I suppose

e-fucking-xactly my point that it's retarded logic. That logic, in essence, is saying that the invention of the wheel was great at the time, now it's lost much of it's greatness.

just because i thought it was an interesting topic that more people might see and comment on in the forums. especially since many users don't use the reviews site there. its just another place to discuss it. i thought it was interesting enough. plus many of us are reviewers and shi.t. i just wanted the POV of the common man :smoke:
and anyone here who might want to discuss it more with others besides us geeks.
i promise the site won't crumble on account of it
