I used to be into Closer, grew out of it since then. believe me, I know this is compared to JD and all, but I don't see it as anything special like i used to with Closer.

I'm not talking about that, it's just hard to review and RATE this album when you don't have an appreciation for the pinnacle of post-punk.

You've probably grown out of the post-punk genre and/or it just never stuck with you.

So I'm not surprised you'd give another exceptional post-punk album a low score.

I'm also not surprised to see this album getting such a high praise and rating here because I, along with many, see the brillance akin to Joy Division.

So it doesn't come down to opinions but the fact your musical taste can't reflect the caliber of this album.

You're talking as if I just recently started listening to this album, when I was introduced to the genre collectively (JD, Interpol, Talking Heads-ish) years ago, and continue to get stuff like Wire and the Chameleons from time to time. I loved Closer but didn't like this much. Time went on, and I grew out of that album which I agree was the pinnacle. Just because I didn't like this one album doesn't mean I write off the style; by that logic, you must not "appreciate" emo for seeing AtRU as average. We both know that's stupid, though.

Bottom line is, I have experience in the genre and still don't like TotBL.This Message Edited On 08.13.08

as much as your opinion hurts my insides and makes me piss blood, i read this review and found it good enough for a pos. it just seemed like your opinion of how this sounds differs greatly from most people, but that doesn't mean there is anything wrong with your review

have you been keeping up with the thread at all? He wrote about what he felt about the album. There's no way the review can be good!
I could be mistaken but aren't reviews the reviewers thoughts on the album?

Nope, if it's just that, its useless. Unless that person has really really good taste in music. It needs more in it.
you lose at life

wtf is 'good taste in music'? You think everyone should like certain records?
So basically every notable album ever should have a high rating because the people who UNDERSTAND that genre will rate it accordingly? the 'understanding the genre' argument is retarded

Mmmm I think I didn't explain the reason I negged this too good. Obviously everyone who writes a review feels something about the album they're reviewing, but it's not really a good review if it relies on that too much. A "legitimate" critisicm..... you say the album has limited creativity which is just bs, you complain the drums and bass are too far back in the mix but then you complain the album is also too subdued it and puts you to sleep. Also, drone/industrial music is a legitimate genre too, so if you hate this album for being to sleepy, you pretty much have to write off that entire genre.

natey: Meaning that you'll be browsing through a review site like rym or metal archives and every once in a while you'll run in to a person who is literally right every time and the reasons behind their ratings are flawless, etc even if you don't necessarily agree with them every time. People with good taste have heard so much music and thought about it enough so that they are usually on target with their reviews.

Also you could talk about the roots of Interpol's sound, in like Velvet Underground, Joy Division which you mentioned, and its relation to the music scene of when it was made. For what it's worth, this review was well written, even if I think it was really wrong and unjustified.
