Nice review, except the beginning of Octavarium is done with a continuum fingerboard instead of a guitar (which comes in later). Favorite album by Dream Theater.

If you are feeling like some driving rock with awesome drums and quick transitions...no other choice man. DT has it all

This is a great album. Thought not as good as their other spectacular efforts like Scenes From A Memory or Images And Words, it can still please many listeners new and old.
Favorite songs.
Panic Attack
Never Enough
Octavarium

This album is extremely boring and it pains me to see the talents of Portnoy and Petrucci going to waste in this band.
One of my friends is a Dream Theater nut so I got this one because it was cheap. Big mistake. It didn't even have very many of the infamous Dream Theater wanking sessions I'd heard so much about. Only a small section in the last song and it wasn't really that impressive.
I like the drums at the beginning of the first track but that's about it. Petrucci is not given room to shine because he's buried under the barrage of technical wankery and the vocals (squeals).
I tried to like this album but I can't.

Octavarium was the first DT album i bought. I still really like it a lot, but I think it just lacks a bit of the punch ToT has, and there of course isn't any of the amazing mastery like in SFaM or I&W
