I have to disagree. The songs could have definitely used a little trimming (even more than later albums) and a little better song writing. What is better on this album is the bass player... how'd they let him get away?

This album has its good parts, but it is most definitely the weakest Opeth album of them all. The clean sections just sound kind of forced, something that, thankfully, changed later on in their songwriting.

Totally agree. "In Mist She Was Standing" & "The Twilight is my Robe" are Opeth classics. I can't understand why this album isn't rated as highly as their others!

DeFarfalla and Akerfeldt didn't see eye to eye. DeFarfalla wanted his bass to carry a more prominent role in the music, while Akerfeldt liked the more classic approach to metal bass playing. Eventually, they had a falling out, and DeFarfalla was kicked out of the band to be replaced with Lopez's friend Martin Mendez.

They are both incredibly good bassists, but DeFarfalla had a very unique style that stood out in the music, I wonder what the later albums would've sounded like if he stuck around.

Totally agree with your comments on the bass - I much prefer the bass on this and MORNINGRISE to the the other albums. The bass on MAYH is especially poor in comparison.

I still think "Orchid" is very under-rated on Sputnik though!

Akerfeldt wrote all the bass lines for MAYH because they were out of a bassist from when DeFaralla got kicked out. They already wrote the entire album by the time Mendez joined the band, so Mendez just played Akerfeldts bass lines for the album. Thats why the bass on MAYH isn't very good.

Cracking stuff, even if they hadn't figured out how to seamlessly blend umpteen style changes into a 12 minute song yet. Silhouette is glorious!

akerfeldt played the bass actually; mendez didn't have time to learn them before the album recording

anyway this has grown on me a lot. In Mist She Was Standing is godly

You should comment something like that in the Blackwater Park review, that would be sure to start an uproar.

The fact that those passages are actually good?

You obviously don't listen to much classical music. That changes themes and moods throughout one piece. Opeth's music plays out the same way. So it was said that if Mozart were alive now, he'd probably be in a metal band...whether you want to admit it or not.

Requiem, a 5.5/10? It's not supposed to stand on its own like the rest; it's just an interlude. Just think of it as an extension of The Twilight Is My Robe, not as an instrumental on its own.

Once I got into this I was surprised how consistent this is seeing that this is almost an entirely different Opeth than post-Morningrise.

For what this record is, it's quite solid from start to finish and difficult to find a standout but I'd say Twilight and Forest are up there.

You're obviously deaf and/or severely mentally retarded.

I've come to the conclusion The Twilight Is My Robe is far and away their best song. Perfectly combines death metal, black metal, folk, and classical.
