I loved City of Evil, I hated the early stuff and was really excited towards this album,
when they said they'll try to make all their fans happy is when I got a bit worried..
And I was right to be - this album is pretty bad, I like Scream, Critical Acclaim and Brompton Cocktail and that's it.
I really hope this sells low so they realize they were on the right path with CoE,
and hopefully in two years or whenever they make a new album, they'll get it right. This Message Edited On 11.04.07

I'd give this cd a 5 if they opened up and told everybody that their goal for this cd was to put as much random and uncoordinated music into a cd as poorly as their imaginations would permit them to.
Completely devoid of any of their older stuff. It just had mere traces of COE in it.
I sure hope that this was the result of MTV pressure, and not what they actually wanted. Because if it was what they wanted, then they don't deserve to be called metal anymore. They go from nu(ish)-metal (WTF) to poppy metal (COE) to loud emo (A7X). If this is their idea of a trend, then they are on a path of musical garbage.
Don't torture the lenses that would read this cd. Fulfill this cd's true purpose, use it as a coaster.

You seriously better never post here again, steve3847. EVER! I hope this was a long time member creating an account and messing with people. Cause if it isn't, then I have lost faith in mankind. This Message Edited On 11.07.07

First impression: What the fuck........................?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!
2nd impression: puked on cd
3rd impression: shat on puked on cd
4th impression: puked again on shat on puked cd
5th impression: maybe this isnt actually so bad
6th impression: ok I can see what they were thinking with this album
but yeah. I listened to this a lot because i used to love this band and was utterly shocked and was trying to figure out how hell it appeals more to the band to play stuff like this than what they were doing before. And i no longer hate it. That said, its by no means a good album. Just not as disgustingly awful as i first thought.
Anyways, I disagree that this is CoE minus cool guitar parts. Not only the guitar, but the drumming, structures, and even the entire premise of the album is completely different. With CoE the band took a very maximalist approach and I think they tried to do too much often at the expense of the songwriting and failed. Here it looks like they tried to go to the opposite extreme (barring A Little Piece of Heaven), simplify things, focus on the songwriting, but they got caught up trying to be too inventive with it and failed at that too. My first thought was that this album somehow manages to sound exactly like A7X... minus the metal. Leaving some disorganized mainstream formulaic music with some random interesting parts dispersed through the album. This Message Edited On 11.07.07

"Avenged Sevenfold is loud emo?"
No, I mean their self-titled cd.
"You seriously better never post here again, steve3847. EVER! I hope this was a long time member creating an account and messing with people. Cause if it isn't, then I have lost faith in mankind."
I seriously better not post here again? What gives you the right to say that? If you don't like what I write, then don't read what I write. I have expressed an opinion in a reasonable matter, and as long as it is reasonable I can say whatever I please. It's called the First Amendment. At least respect the fact that someone's opinion is different from yours, otherwise you wouldn't learn anything.
I believe this cd was horrible. Abysmal. I respect whatever opinion you have for it, but I don't care what it is.

Hmm there were bound to be a few fanboys out there defending "their" band. Album is just what i expected from it really.
Below average.
|
| |
I'm not sure what's funnier; the fanboys who trash the well written reviews, or the fanboys who go into fanboy crisis when their favorite band releases awful material  fanboy crisis, never heard that one before.

I have expressed an opinion in a reasonable matter, and as long as it is reasonable I can say whatever I please. You called WTF "nu-metal" and Avenged Sevenfold "loud emo". How the fuck is that reasonable???

The musicianship of this band is going downhill, but, despite all the hate going towards "A little piece of heaven", I think it's a fantastic song and everything else is nowhere up to par with it. The song might be cheesy, but it's epic.

You took the words outta my mouth mate. Your review is exactly what I think of the new album.
Whenever I hear Shadows sing I want to stab him or something. He was sort of cocky on the previous album, now he is one of the biggest douche bags in a band I have ever seen/heard.
If I want to listen to this band I'll get Waking the Fallen or perhaps even City of Evil.

Album Rating: 3.5 | Sound Off
Avenged Sevenfold have put fourth what they call the real Avenged Sevenfold and as a listener I can’t complain, (especially considering no other A7X album kept me listening more) the band has continued to develop their own sound, a great combination of legendary influences the band members share, ranging from Pantera, Gun’s and Rose’s, Dream Theater (most notably their lead guitarist John Petrucci) Metallica, and many other beloved Rock/Metal bands of the past. That pretty much why i feel a 1/5 is absolutley ridiculous im a huge fan boy granted but i would hav to give it nothing lower of higher then a 4 by far my fav album by this band im not one of those emo kids who didnt slit their wrists cus "seize the day" brought a tear to their eye either im a true fan their since 1999, saw them in So. Cali when their set consisted of only darkness surrounding and too end the rapture so bah too all you haters who cant appreciate progression sorry they didnt jus try an sound like ur typical rock band PEACE

No, they tried to sound like your typical rock band, and then mooch off of an original band like Oingo-Boingo (that'd be the circus sounds in the ninth track)

Okay, if you didn't hear in some of their interviews, they used different kinds of music to make this album. When people say "Oh that's not normal for them to sound like this"....What is normal for them? They came a long way to make album and they did a great job at it too. In my opinion that is. And about the guitar riffs sounding the same, listen again. Yeah they took a risk, but they landed perfectly on their feet. And if you, or anyone else can't accept that..Why are you their fans to begin with? TRUE fans won't bash their favorite band(s). I truly commend them for what they did.
