I used to feel the same about Fallow, but it's been growing on me a lot lately. Illustrated Bible Stories and Anchorless are so great.
"Just make them tied and be done with it"
noooooooooo can't do it dude. I'm super OCD, and always have to have all my favourite bands listed from best to worst album, in writing. I was just re-doing a bunch of them yesterday, and I stalled for literally hours on the Mountain Goats because I couldn't decide 3/4/5 (eventually settled on Sunset Tree/Tallahassee/West Texas but arghhhh AHWT at 5th? bad is too good). Even if I'm going to be the only one seeing it, I just HAVE to have it all in order.
so no, it does not go:
-Reconstruction Site
-Left and Leaving
-Fallow/Reunion Tour
it goes:

band* is too good. All Hail West Texas would be an easy #1 for like any other band in the world.

Hey Aids, I wrote a thing about ...Explains Her Departure, maybe you'd like it? http://thevalrus.tumblr.com/post/17079159785/virtute-the-cat
It's pretty straightforward I guess but I was trying to give words to why it's so powerful. Fuck. That fucking song.

damn dude, that is a wonderful piece
it's my favourite song of all time, and you definitely did it justice. I love personal write-ups of songs/albums/whatevers as well. I did one for "One Great City" that you should read. Not sure if randoms can see my facebook page, so if the link comes up as dead for you (and you care to read it) let me know.

yours is much more succinct. I have a tendency to ramble, especially when it comes to The Mountain Goats and The Weakerthans (incidentally, I also prefer the former).

Very nice essay. I think I don't relate to "One Great City" as much, perhaps, because I've never felt that strong an attachment to my hometown or, indeed, a very strong sense of place at all. But it's still fascinating to read about, and your personal story really brings it home.
I think I actually prefer "Heart of the Continent" but I'm not sure why... The melody, maybe, and I think everything about the line "Just another door that won't open for me anymore", right down to the delivery, is killer.
Also I don't know if you've seen this, but it seems like you'd find everything about it absolutely delightful: http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=eK8x-77GqB0&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DeK8x-77GqB0

this has my favorite of the two virtute songs, solely because the last few lines are quite possibly the saddest thing i've ever heard

However, there are also fat pitfalls on the album. Songs like "Virtue The Cat Explains Her Departure," "Elegy for Gump Worsley" and "Big Foot!" leave me scratching my head. They have pretty moments but don't hang together as songs particularly well.

+Jacob Joron We interviewed John last saturday (before the show) and discussed his song writing output. It has slowed down to one or maybe two songs per year. As he played two new songs last saturday, I don't think there are many more new ones right now. He also said that the band members of the Weakerthans are doing other stuff in their lives now. He didn't think any new Weakerthans output was happening soon, even though you never know what will happen in the future...
