Other then including the name of a Swedish city, what the hell is a gothenburg riff?

Gothenburg metal is just another form of Melodic Death Metal, pretty much the same thing

I'm settling on a 3, as much as they got rid of the 'core', it just all sounds the same with some thrash influence. The beginning riff to An Ocean Between Us is just pathetic and Josh sounds like a baboon.

Excellent review. I was quite surprised with this album, even though its still mediocre. I wont be buying this simply because I have grown out of this type of music.

Good review. As I lay dying basically defines what generic is since they are basically the #1 band in the metalcore genre. I'm not say they are generic, but since they wrote the music...a few hundred other bands are going to take infulence from them. In turn they will make music that sounds the same as as i lay dying only not as good. If you can understand that...i have a hard time explaining it. This Message Edited On 08.19.07

They wouldn't define generic then really, but they would be the general band everyone rips.
Then again, what you said does make a little sense. This Message Edited On 08.19.07

As long as they are using those god awful vocals they can stay in the metalcore genre...

Dude, schweeeeet review, different but very interessting. I really want to get this, because I always thought that AILD should start soloing more and it seems that they did. Can't wait to get this.

Not really, Darkest Hour and Unearth played this breed of metalcore before AILD existed.

I severely doubt you've listened to Hidden Hands of a Sadist Nation. It's so -core it's not even funny.

Undoing Ruin still had quite a bit of -core but there was a lot more Gothenburg influence. Deliver Us has no core though.

Darkest Hour is by no means melo death.

I'm usually very good at telling the difference between a metalcore band and a melodic death metal band.

What I heard from Hidden Hands was pretty much metalcore. I think every since then they have been slowly integrating melo death into their style, or at least trying at it.
