I totally believe it. There are very few drummers out there that can match his speed these days. Nick Barker, Vader's drummer, Flo Mounier, and Gene Hoglan...but that's about it.
There are plenty more. George Kollias, Derek Roddy, Frost, Hellhammer, Pete Sandoval, Dave Suzuki, Dave Mackintosh, Hannes Grossmann, Steve Asheim...the list goes on.This Message Edited On 09.07.06

^ Buts we are talkin about death metal here. So all these guys are a HUGE combination of both Speed and Ability.

Even in death metal, technique > speed. I'm not impressed by an unnecessarily fast blast beat. Here's my example:
Bobby Jarzombek > Flo Mounier.
He can go fast, but would rather play interesting parts instead. Not a "Death Metal" drummer, but more than capable of it.

You obviously no more death metal drummers than me sooo..........who is Bobby Jarzombek??
|
| |
Kollias (sp.?) from Nile and Frost from 1349 i think could stand up over Flo but idk what band does Bobby Jarzombek play for?
|
| |
Roddy played for Hate Eternal and Nile and a few more i think

This guys does have an extreme amount of talent though. IF you listen to The Reign ov Shemsu Hor, after the intro, i think someone shoots a machine gun through the recording studio. But true, tech does prevail over speed however i think the speed these guys incorperate makes for a technical offering in and of itselfThis Message Edited On 11.07.06

^^ Bobby Jarzombek has played for tons of bands, most notably Iced Earth. He's pretty impressive, I recommend checking out some of his videos streaming online.
Props to Thor for the Grossman, Kollias, Mackintosh, and Roddy examples.
Those were mine.

I understand what you're getting it, but that's not an example I would've used. Flo is one of the few lightning fast death metal drummers who can play faster god and still make up unique, interesting rhythms. And Roddy played for Hate Eternal among others, to whoever asked.
Back on the review, man, I've been planning on reviewing this for quite some time. I may eventually do it some day. :pThis Message Edited On 11.07.06

did anyone give the bro from Meshuggah an honerable mention for his polyrythem skills?

One of my favorite death metal albums, and oddly enough one reason it's a favorite is for the layered vocals...

I really didn't like the vocals at first, but they grew on me. It only took months to do so!
Amazing album and I can't wait for their next.

Spent ten minutes reading through the review & comments. I'm really digging Nile "annihilation of the wicked" at the moment. Convinced me to get hold of Behemoth. Never heard 'em before. Is "demigod" the right place to start?

^^ Yes it is. They are similar to Nile, but in other ways are not. Think Nile meets Morbid Angel meets melodic death metal sorta stuff.

Basically, a combination of all things good about death metal!
I'm so excited for the new album. I bet it will be everything this album was, but just bigger, badder, and better.

OK I got it. It's gonna take a few listens before I can rate it. So far "the nephelim rising" and "the reign ov Shemsu-hor" stand out.

Those are probably my two favorites as well, although I can't forget the title track and "Sculpting the Throne Ov-Seth".
