The BSB thing was just for comparison purposes. If I said the BSB's album was a great present for a 13-year-old, no one would disagree with me. I say the same thing about FOB, and now I'm a snob? I was stating that there's very little if any difference, as they're both disposable teen pop sensations that no one will care about in five years.

It's not snobbery. It's called different tastes. I'm only a snob because I disagree

with you, apparently. As for 'obvious differences'...

- Overnight mainstream sensations? Check!

- Songs dealing with heavier matters such as getting laid and disguising it with

horrible puns/overly cheesy song titles/lyrics? Check!

- ProTool punched-in vocals, cleverly masking the fact that they can't sing live?

Check!

- Marketing tool used by record labels to sell an album with five good songs on it

and about ten filler tracks, hoping that people will buy it solely based upon singer/

songwriter's dick size/magazine-ready complexion? Check!

- Song formulas that go verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus? Check!

- Unusually popular with a crowd not old enough to drive or buy cigarettes? Check!

Pop is pop. The difference is, FOB write their songs. Talent and originality, though,

go farther than writing clever puns about scenes and ex-girlfriends that no one

gives a f*ck about. And certainly doesn't say much that a 15-year-old three months

into guitar that isn't tone-deaf could write this album in his sleep. This Message Edited On 02.11.07

They were good when I saw them. :[

But yeah, this is pretty bland. The talk of sex and break ups are so generic here, as opposed to the immediacy and mostly truthful odes to heartbreak in From Under the Cork Tree.

I agree. IOH isn't absolutely godawful, but FUtCT is a far stronger album overall.

I was saying that there's far more interesting things to talk about - yes, even in pop

music - than girls, MySpace, and other drivel. Gatsby's American Dream self-titled

was one of the catchiest records of last year, and lyrically reamed the music industry

a new one with its stinging commentary on shady business practices. Their other

albums examine popular/classic literature and use the themes of those works to

tie-in to experiences everyone shares in life. Lagwagon writes about girls, true, but

they also tackle issues such as alienation, homophobia, death, suicide, and

isolation. NOFX are poppy as hell and are also one of the most political bands out

there. Not to mention Fat Mike is more than able to hang with Pete Wentz when it

comes to sarcasm/play on words.

All I'm saying is, if FOB are such great lyricists they could write about something

that isn't so bland and predictable. Good pop music is good pop music, but it's

even better when the subject material isn't the standard my-gf-broke-up-with-me-

I-wanna-die fare or ha-ha-we're-popular-and-you're-all-just-haters.

You want killer hooks and/or excellent musicianship? Listen to Lagwagon, Gatsby's,

NOFX, Jawbreaker, Classic Case, Minus The Bear, Bad Astronaut, No Use For A

Name, Strung Out, Bayside, Television, The Strokes, No Knife, Bear Vs. Shark,

Comeback Kid, A Wilhelm Scream, No Trigger, Ignite, Good Riddance, At The Drive-

In, +44, blink-182, Matchbook Romance... f*ck, even P!ATD. Those aren't all pop-

punk but I'm sure you'd dig 'em.

You like awesome lyrics that actually make you think? Try Propagandhi, Refused,

Jawbreaker, Rise Against, Strike Anywhere... those lists could go on forever. This Message Edited On 02.11.07

i hate how people label fall out boy as mainstream music. the only reason most people label them as that is because they hear the music MTV puts on and can pass as a mainstream song. listen to all their music. start with the indie stuff from when their up and coming. THEN tell me that they're mainstream music

Considering their sound has barely changed its safe to say they've always been mainstream. I hate when kids think its a bad thing to like mainstream music, the songs are the same either so get over it. Fall Out Boy make pop music for the mainstream, its still safe for you to like them so dont worry.

I'm a devout Fall Out Boy fan and even I think they're mainstream. They may have been teetering on the verge of their own sound with Take This To Your Grave, but Infinity On High cements it.

They're just better than the average mainstream music.

Why do people care if it's mainstream or not?

Oh, a lot of people seem to have heard/like the music....then it's automatically bad?

Yeah, mainstream does not equal bad at all. I used to not listen to as much mainstream music b/c the underground bands tend to be better, but there are plenty of great bands that are mainstream.

ask 100 random people on the street if they've heard of Fall Out Boy. Then come back and tell me they're not mainstream.

StrizzMatik, it seems to me that your given reasons don't provide the whole and entire picture of why you look down on FOB. Maybe somebody you really don't like likes them or something, I don't know. It just comes across as having a tint of irrationality.

First of all, huge bravo to Spat Out Plath for the lyrical argument. One could argue that political messages of dissatisfaction have become almost as cliched as relationship lyrics. Wentz has a way of writing about tired subjects with an original amount of cheeky irony. I much prefer that to "protest is patriotism we hate Bush blah blah"

Fall Out Boy is most certainly mainstream, not because they are popular, but because they are basically re-hashing what has been done before by countless pop/pop-punk artists. This doesn't mean they sound just like everyone else (I don't think they do) it just means you can safely categorize them as mainstream. But that's just me.

I have to say I'm pretty impressed by this album. Although it's not as good as TTTYG, FOB have pulled off a well-produced, pretty well-written effort that refreshes their sound without changing what gives them their charm. One of those albums that leaves you with the impression that pop/pop-punk aren't totally decadent yet.

I wouldn't go as far as to give it a 4 or exactly agree with that last statement, but my like for this album has gone up considerably, but my review still stands.
