there's just not enough development for me on a lot of boc tracks, it often feels like every track only has one idea behind it

dan I'm guessing you don't generally enjoy ambient music?

i like brian eno, saw ii, eluvium, some of ae's more ambient stuff. in general though, i wouldn't say i like that much ambient no.

i dunno something about boc just feels lacking to me. like they are clearly good producers i just feel like they could do a lot more compositionally to change things up and develop their ideas past just looping them for five minutes and adding/removing layers

Try putting Pete Standing Alone on and really focusing on the details. Compositionally brilliant and lots of amazing sounds and ideas

But overall yeah its more aesthetic over composition that's their draw

Pete Standing Alone is one of their best tracks for sure. I see your point about aesthetics over composition, I've always thought of BoC as super A E S T H E T I C

BoC are definitely aesthetics first with only a fair amount of composition behind their music and that's exactly why I've somewhat drifted apart from them in the past couple of years as while they can put some damn good vibes musically not too much ever seems to go on a micro scale (song-to-song, album development is a different story but these days I'm not sitting down to listen to an album every single time). With this EP however I feel they branched out from that and really added a little more depth to their approach, as in for example 'Kid for Today' the way each new minute or so adds and removes new keyboards/synths/drums and effects around without ever disrupting the atmosphere. It's not a massive change or anything but it definitely keeps the music a little more interesting while they continue working on the atmosphere which to their credit is definitely unique to them.
