Huh, I was almost certain it was either a Cannibal Corpse or a Obituary album that was the best selling one...

I also wouldn't have guessed Morbid Angel but that seems more reasonable than Deicide at least

covenant is the only death metal album released by a major label (giant records). it had tons of money and marketing behind it and was very nearly “mainstream” in 1993.

Interesting. I thought CC were the ones that got the biggest marketing at the time. But maybe they got more popular later

Makes sense that this is would be the biggest selling DM album since it sounds like Reign in Blood 2. It's the early 90s, you're into Slayer, Evil Dead 2 is your favorite movie, grunge hasn't hit. Then consider Deicide had Roadrunner's muscle back during first wave death metal's peak. Even Glen Benton's vocals sound like Tom Araya on Hell Awaits with the vocal effects.

It might also be a factor that despite how spooky and edgy Deicide are, the edgiest they got back then was having a pro-suicide song. Cannibal Corpse's album covers had people being eviscerated and had song titles like Necropedophile which probably turned people's stomach more than cartoon devils and zombies. While I'm yapping, Glen Benton was more of a shock rock frontman type which probably gets more publicity than being able to downpick fast.

the wikipedia page says:

"Deicide is considered a classic in the death metal genre, and is sometimes considered to be the best-selling death metal album of all time.[8][18] Nielsen SoundScan lists it second to Morbid Angel's Covenant up until 2003; however, Deicide was released before SoundScan went into effect, so the SoundScan figure lacks pre-Soundscan sales."

so i guess it could be this one. i would have thought an obituary or six feet under record would be above it but glenn and steve just knew how to sell a record i guess.
