Elliot Smith bored me, but i checked him out like ten years ago when i was getting out of my almost-exclusively-metal-listener phase. maybe ill give him another shot sometime.

Elliot Smith is kinda overrated to me. I like his lyrics and his moodiness but his songwriting isn't something I'm terribly into

Having almost finished Smith’s discog at this point, I think he’s really great and really consistent but definitely not the GOAT or even particularly close. A lot of his songs kind of frustrate me, and there are relatively few that blow my mind. Something that kind of bothers me in a lot of his songs is he doesn’t always do a good job of fitting his words into strong melodic lines.

A 4 is on the high end of things, how you gonna call it overrated when you like it that much? Doesnt make sense

I disagree with this. Bridgers isn’t a great example but take a case like OK Computer or something where the vast majority rate it at a 4.5 or 5/5 level. If you rate it a 4 then I think you’re justified in saying you think it’s overrated. Overrated =/= not good.

"he's possibly the greatest songwriter of all time"

cmon I could see someone being superlative about his lyrics, but songwriting? Really nothing compositionally impressive about his songs

About time, new song is wonderful too

I listened to what was considered essential Elliot Smith albums a little while ago, they weren't really anything that blew me away; solid but hardly outstanding imo

yoooooo Kyoto is crazy good. Didn't expect that instrumentation after hearing that live version

Much much better than Garden Song imo, makes me think that song would work better in context
