If you cut off Now That We Dead, Dream, Murder One, and replaced Revenge with Lords of Summer this would be wayyyy better.

I actually like 'Now That We're Dead'. Not a highlight, granted, but it's so damn catchy. Not entirely sure why everyone loves 'Dream No More', though. I remember another review elsewhere saying it "sounds like a b-side from Load" and I couldn't have put it better myself.
On the subject of 'Lords of Summer', agreed that they should have included it in the main track list. Hell, I'd even say it would justify the double disc format when the whole main track list falls just two minutes under the 80 minute mark at its official form. I would have opened the album with it even.

The best thing about this album is that it might make some people appreciate their Load/Reload days a bit more. Halo on Fire rules though.

I have a bit more time for that era, well 'Load' at least. 'Reload' is worse than this imo and boasts some really embarrassing material.
'Load' has some standouts but it really plods as a whole.

I agree with Anthony Fantano's review on this. It's a "meat and potatoes" Metallica album.

No, a 'meat and potatoes' middle ground 'Tallica would still have more melody than this
The 'meat and potatoes' Metallica albums are probably the Black Album and Death Magnetic
This album is trying to be a Kill 'Em All referencing rebirth to my mind, I'm guessing it has similar motivations to St.Anger (still never listened to that one so only going on what I've read and the couple of songs I do know)

Interesting viewpoint you have there. I agree about black album, although I like many people disregard DM because of its crappy distorted production. This album just sounds like the result of a seasoned metal band where every member is enjoying themselves in my opinion while getting back to playing some sick riffs.

Part of me not much rating the album is personal preference, I always liked the melodic passages in the songs on 'Ride' or 'Master' that were worked in incredibly seamlessly and gave their stuff a depth. Some ok riffs here but I felt (even with the handicap of that production) Death Magnetic had a bit more melodic personality going on in the mix. They were still trying to write 'classic Metallica songs'. Here they seem to be going for writing 'some great riffs'.
I can understand someone giving this a 4 (no more than that mind) as it is aimed squarely at a certain style and if that matches your sweet spot then you're cooking

"I don't know this version but the fist version of Lords of Summer was horrible"
The original version you may have heard was either the 'garage demo version' or '1st pass'. The one on the deluxe edition of Hardwired is rerecorded and sounds a lot cleaner. It's probably worth getting the three disc version for that alone honestly, but you also get the Ronnie James Dio medley and some covers of Deep Purple and Iron Maiden with it.
