"Mangini is great but Portnoy is of another dimension in every aspects. "
Totally disagree but in the end it's a matter of personal preference I guess.
And yea Titan, expectations are high, but I'm only mildly optimistic they'll be able to pull off something spectacular at this point. But hope is the last to die :]

"Randomly got into them pretty heavily around the Systematic Chaos / Black Clouds era, so I like both of those a lot even though I know they're far from the band's best."
prob an unpopular opinion but i think black clouds is their best album besides the images/awake/scenes trifecta

Black Clouds is absolutely great and at a solid 6th position in my book, following Awake / Images / Scenes / Six Degrees and Infinity.

Yea, Black Clouds, despite all the flaws, is just really really strong imo

Black Clouds is really solid for sure. Crazy how quickly a 75-minute album can fly by (which can also be said for this album, of course)

A Dramatic Turn is good too. Their worst 3 records are their last 3 and that’s just a fact.

The Astonishing is the most hideous thing they’ve done

Man, I sure do love the lyrics of Voices
Fuck this whore;
drink a troll;
now be with my mind, I'm a radio;
but where is the girl that I'm feeling?
I feel Elaine;
I feel the breast;
sucks his dick;
captain sex!

"black clouds is their best album besides the images/awake/scenes trifecta"
It might be the insane nostalgia, but I feel this too
I must have listened to the last two albums 5 or 6 times each, and yet there's nothing on there that made me feel like I needed to hear them again. They were both just *fine*
Also I've always passively hated Astonishing despite having only listened to like, 5 minutes of it the year it came out because my friends and a bunch of people online told me it was shit. Which is completely stupid, now that I think about it. Sucks to know that I'm not above dumb tribal idiocy

I finished it once, but to my defense, it was still new and I was painting a room in my house

let's keep the Dream Theater discussion in the thread for the one album of theirs that is worth returning to and the only one where Labrie isn't insufferable to listen to (dis one)
