I feel like a lot of people who hate nu metal go and find the shittiest bands in the genre and are like "damnnn I guess Korn is the only good nu metal."
Like nah big dawg you heard Korn's self titled then listened to papa roach and hed PE. It'd be like if I loved tomb of the mutilated but hated death metal because I heard six feet under and Illud divinum insanus

at a point in time, for sure. Nu metal bands were literally going no. 1 on the billboard 200 twenty-five years ago so I think that makes a lot of sense.

call me crazy but I think kids coming up now are wayyy more eclectic than a lot of people in my age bracket (late 20s) or older. Im sure theres some 11 y/o out there who got obsessed with deftones through tik tok and hes already moved onto mayhem and dystopia. Social media and sites like rym, and streaming services have kinda been breaking down the barriers of fanbases and scenes for a time

For sure, when you're growing up downloading songs off Kazaa/Limewire at 5 kbp/s (on a good day), you had to pick what you listened to carefully!
I think my mind would have exploded if I had the access to music I do now back when I was 12.

Always forget this is a 'GOAT year of 1994' release...was only marketed in the UK in 1995 I think.
Also a lot of the metal rags back in the day (definitely Kerrang) didn't know what to make of this when it first came out, really shat on it, then they re-reviewed it with 5 star reviews about six months later.

Kerrang had a lot of influence in the UK before the internet, mainstream rock and metal were a big deal then, today it's so niche I almost feel sorry for them.

I think they screwed up with Aenima by Tool as well...
'Initial Review (1996): According to a 2019 Kerrang! article looking back at the album, their original 1996 reviewer (Paul Travers) was "more bewildered by what he had just heard than able to properly process his thoughts," describing it as having "a fair amount of weirdness" and sitting on the fence.
Star Rating/Reputation: While the specific number of stars from the physical 1996 issue is not directly cited in the search results, the description confirms it was not the immediately high praise the album enjoys today.
Retrospective Status: Kerrang! later heavily lauded Ænima, ranking it the sixth most influential album of all time in 2003.'
I'm pretty sure it got a 3 out of 5 which was an absolute dirt review for Kerrang that would give everything a 4 out of 5 at least. I think this album might have got a 2 out of 5 and tiny review on initial release.
