You should start with their last album it's more bearable.

Down in a Hole, Rooster, Dirt, Angry Chair and Would? are incredible songs though.

You've just gotta feel it... gotta feel the dark vibes of the music

embrace the metal and the atmosphere... wail every lyric like the album's the last you'll hear on this earth

give it time and give it some love... you'll feel it soon

The biggest reason I love this album is that it's such an honest representation of life. The band weren't going to sugarcoat the subject matter because it wouldn't be an accurate portrayal. Almost anyone out there can relate to the album in some way or another, a very tough feat for a record to achieve. This album is an amazing and heartfelt look at some very personal problems and tensions; you could almost consider it Alice in Chains' answer to Rumours by Fleetwood Mac since both dealt with drug issues and internal struggles (although Fleetwood Mac's were more about love problems than with things like death). The album can be tough to sit through at times, but it's absolutely worth it in the end. The compositions are amazing, the lyrics are tragically beautiful, and the overall record is one of the most consistent records I've ever heard.

That's what makes it so great.

The atmosphere of this album is thick and heavy. You can feel the weight of Layne's pain in this work.

I swear, Angry Chair is the easiest guitar song to learn. Which is amazing, cause the song rules.

I need to learn Alice in Chain basslines. This album is full of beautiful bass.
