youre trying to use that as a detraction of meshuggah but like... a genre is only as good as its bands and theres a ton of shitty death metal bands but that doesnt make possessed or death any worse

the riffs on this album are mostly just dull and it really seems like they ran hard out of ideas on here

Real talk, I just reckon this is where they got the slow, heavy grooves perfected, which is my favourite thing about the band. DEI is just as good, but because it's got that thrashier sound, this one will always be my #1. Totally understand where you're coming from as well, but idk this band is immense I love everything they do. Also I reckon the Nothing re-issue is far superior to the original.

You probably won't, because your problem with this seems to be the music, not the production.

lol, Art just doesnt get it.

Maybe check Catch 33?

its about the hypnotic groove bro, as Tempest said, its perfected here. I originally thought the riffs were un inspired on this compared to thier earlier work, (another example of such a phenomenon would be my attitude towards GSTK - Pantera's lack of inventive guitar work when compared to CFH).

After a change of perspective, I realized in both cases that there was a larger purpose to be served than just catching your ear from moment to moment. Especially in the case of Nothing, try playing along to any of the riffs on this album. Yes they're just one finger pull offs and chugs, but its the timing that makes it so original.

Tomas Hakke has explicitly said that the concept of Meshuggah's music is that the guitars and even the vocals are used as rhythm instruments.

"Maybe check Catch 33?"

yeah i like it more than this

anyway, it's obvious that this album is all about the rhythms but i don't see the appeal at all

it's trance enducing. you pick up on the main riff of the song and just follow it through all the subtle changes and things they throw in. the songs sound samey but are all very unique (see Spasm especially like wtf). before you know it you're headbanging in perfect sync to the whole album.

i don't know this album does so much for me still spin it regularly

"it doesn't help much if the guitar work otherwise is uninspired as fuck"

you don't know why the riffs are the way they are. they pretty much made them as if they're playing bass on guitar, and as dumb as that sounds they pulled it off well and the change from 7 to 8 strings gave them the new spectrum of range and power.

"pioneers of one of the most boring metal sub-genres agreed"

it's not like they have a direct affiliation of it. more like you have the crazy bitch Periphery "Girl" that spermjacked Meshuggah "Guy" and now Meshuggah has to go along and be supportive with it cuz of pressure from the interviewers/fans "Friends".

"there's only 1: meshuggah"

yeah nobody will ever be like them, nobody will actually be in a genre with them unless they're straight ripping them off

I've always thought that this (the original and not the re-recording) beat Catch 33 in every way.

It's so much more organic, and the songs are very solid for the most part.
