Progress implies a step in the right direction or continuous improvement, Eno.

no because then we could say that anything we don't actually enjoy is a failure on the band's part to progress as a band.
like many at the-drive in fans don't enjoy mars volta, but it's obviously much of a progression on omar rodriguez's part.

I fail to see how it's a progress in general. Looking beyond my bias for a second here, I still see this as a regression in every sense of the word. Lyrically, and musically. It can be argued that the vocals have improved, depending on what type of person you are, but their writing here leaves a lot to be desired in my opinion.

mediocre alt rock
This is stuff like Theory of a Deadman lol

well i'd argue their at their most technical and produced. the vocals went from all moody to really intense and screamed. songwriting went from pop-oriented alternative music to sort of grungy, noisy indie rock. i haven't really delved into the lyrics here yet, so I can't comment on that side.

eno you should really try melting cheese on a bagel. it's one of the most delicious things ever i'm surprised you haven't had it before
|
| |
idk i can't imagine melted cheese working with the texture of bagels, they seem too thick.

I would definitely argue against that, and you kind of contradicted yourself by calling it their most produced (not COMPLETELY sure what that means) and then saying that it sounds grungy and noisy. The production value isn't amazing :S
Anyways, I do like this album, but I fail to see how it's a musical progression, and I will never understand how people find some of their most boring songs to be their most enticing.

| |
not really a contradiction at all. noisy was meant as in abrasiveness. if somebody ran their guitar through heavy, processed distortion, that's both heavily produced and noisy. noise and production aren't exactly opposites, especially when production is used for noisy effect.

I don't know man... I don't usually think that 'noisy' music is well produced, or that it was ever the artists intention. TDAGARIM has much better production value than this.

I'm assuming that by noisy, you don't mean stuff like Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, or the countless black metal, screamo, and crust punk bands.
