Saw Karnivool last night in Adelaide and they were bloody awesome. Great setlist aswell (Illumine! Yay!)
Had a chat to Drew and Hoss after the show, awesome blokes. Drew said that 'The Refusal' isn't like the other stuff that they've written and that the reason they stopped playing 'Sky Machine' is because they weren't fully happy with it and want to play around with it and make it better.

Awesome. Thanks for info. Curious, how long did you have to wait around after the show to meet them? I've tried a few times and never seen them !
|

Not that long. The show had just finished, most people left straight away. Me and some friends were having one last drink before we were about to leave and we saw Drew come out right in front of the stage and then a few mintues later, Hoss came out. Ezekiel from Mammal/Over Reactor also made an appearence.

Album still rules!! Bass is so good, drumming is good, nice guitar lines. This could have come from Swededn with all that rumblin' bass yo.
If you like this you should listen to From Within by Anekdoten.

After listening to Cog's 'The new Normal' I see that Karnivool took a lot of inspiration from them to make this album. as it is very similar

That's cos Cog kick started the whole alternative/proggy movement in Australia.
They did it wayyyyy before anyone else.

Do you have any idea why Cog didn't get massive, Billy? I mean, they were going for 10 years or something and I just can't figure it out myself.

They played sold-out national tours and both of their albums were top 20 releases that went gold. How much bigger did you want them to be, exactly?

Lack of exposure, Puzzles. Everyone except triple j refused to touch them.
But still, for a prog/alternative band, they got as big as they could've, given they weren't exactly aiming for commercial success.
I mean, their underground following was still enormous. They just didnt get the exposure they needed in order to cross over.

Could they have done things better/differently? Or was it just a case of not having major label support as Karnivool and Dead Letter Circus have (Sony)? It does sort of make sense why nobody would want to really get behind them - their music wasn't exactly the most accessible, even in comparison to the aforementioned bands. Those two both have singers that would appeal to a bigger audience in addition to slightly hookier instrumentation (not counting Sound Awake, for the most part).

Once again, Atavan, your opinion's of absolutely no consequence to me. Sure they played sold-out
national tours, but they were mostly to venues of no more than 1500 capacity, even 10 years into their
career. As far as I know, they played their last gig ever at the Tivoli in Brisbane to 1500 people.
After 12 years I wouldn't call that 'big' by any means. On top of that, 'Gold' status in a country
like Australia isn't huge at all.
