'This is their best since DE'
I'd agree with that.

Well at least he didn’t trash it like I figured he would. So if he’s gonna review it I’d rather him give it a good score. He’s been so shitty on them in the past and just assumed he wasn’t gonna rate it

agreed with Fantano's statement that "a lot of this record kinda feels like the band is playing to expectations rather than challenging themselves", basically what I meant with saying they got lazy a few pages back

fantano's reaction to the album is pretty interesting. iirc dude absolutely annihilated all four of de, kny, gore and ohms but now he's rocking out to this album on his stream.
not like i watch his streams really (i see a lot of youtube clips tho) but i wonder how much those affect his opinions these days. if you have hundreds(?) of paying subscribers frothing at the mouth to see how you feel about a super hyped album in a live chat, aren't you naturally gonna be a bit more partial??

It’s not “lazy,” it’s just perfecting the sound. It’s pretty obviously this isn’t innovation or breaking new ground but it really takes all they’ve done and makes it sound as good as it possibly can. I mean they’ve really not been “groundbreaking” since White Pony. A lot of their albums contain similar sounds. It’s just a matter of taste of whether you like it or not.

i think this breaks ground for them in that it feels like the least "metal" thing they've done. stephen's 9-string is the only thing kinda keeping it in that realm. otherwise feels pretty post-hardcore/shoegaze to me.

stephen carpenter power chords just hit differently, maybe it's the extra string.

No 9-string on this album.
He used the headless 8-string Kiesels on the majority of this one.

The more I listen to this, the less I actually like it. cXz, souvenir, metal dream, and departing the body are all skippable tracks for me. This is on par with Saturday Night Wrist or their self titled for me

It is very much a solid album. But the weakest of the 3 that Nick has produced.
If these guys have another album in them I hope it’ll be produced by Terry Date.
I think Ohms was a noticeably better album than this.

@ludens lmao wait that makes this the first time he's ever tuned up/subtracted a string from his guitar from the previous album. figured he was still playing the 9 even if i don't recall anything here that sounds like one

He’s only used the 9-string on one studio track, which was Spell of Mathematics on Ohms.
Otherwise all 8-strings from Diamond Eyes on.

hard disagree Ludens. I love Ohms but production on this is spot on, when compared to it. Also this is more consistent than Ohms, which really starts heating with the spell of math imo.

the production on here is solid and a bit nicer on chino's voice... but ohms production is masterful imo. best part of that album

It’s not that I think the production on this album is bad per se — it’s just that Date really brought back that sonic, punishing sound from their earlier works on Ohms. Even the simplest sounding songs on that album sound absolutely massive.
Also, I feel like private music recycles ideas that were recently used. The opening riff for My Mind is a Mountain is virtually the same as the opening for Urantia. Which speaking of the latter, was a real ‘anthem’ track from Ohms. Whereas private music doesn’t seem to have have one of those. Though I will say Infinite Source comes close.
The bridge on ‘Ceremony’ is better than any bridge featured on private music.
Stef did get to do some experimentation on Ohms with the 9 — and it actually surprisingly sounded quite good compared to other guitarists that muddy out that additional string by comparison. Also has the nice little finger snaps outro.
Pompeii has a great outro. Like something out of a David Lynch film. I’d even argue that souvenir off of private music is more of a cheap imitation of both Spell and Pompeii, with a less interesting outro as the one on Ohms sounds more dynamic and textured.
‘cut hands’, while a favorite song of mine off of private music, is just a musical rehash of the title track off of Diamond Eyes. I mean that ending breakdown is virtually identical.
I’ll happily be in the minority if needed — but I think Ohms clears this rather easily. Terry has always been able to challenge these guys even when they don’t want to be at their best. He doesn’t let them rest on their laurels.

Not yet for me. I just finished a discog run and this record really comes out of nowhere when it comes to their later material.
