Christ, Hold Up A Light is awful... Definitely their most generic album overall, but it's far from bad in my opinion. Some nice songs in the middle and I quite like the last 2 tracks as well. Shares a lot in common with Beggars, except Beggars is far more consistent.

still enjoying this one, perhaps a 3.5 would be more fitting, but the highs are high

Agreed. Blood on Blood is superb, and there are at least 4-5 other good songs. The weirdest thing about this era of Thrice for me is how bad Hold Up A Light and My Soul are, yet they had an entire EPs worth of b-sides that are arguably better than most of the songs on the LP. I still listen to a combined version of those releases:
1) Deeper Wells
2) The Grey
3) The Dark
4) A Branch in the River
5) A Better Bridge
6) Blood on Blood
7) Just Breathe
8) In This Storm
9) Stumbling West
10) Beyond the Pines
IMO that totally would've been a 4.5 release.

Just Breathe is my favorite off this one.
Also, weren't they supposed to release Horizons/West a while ago? They mentioned a few years ago they would release the rest of the recorded songs.

This really sounds too dry for the energy it wants to show. Sucks some life out of the tracks where they really need it.

Definitely their worst album, but I do like the opener, the closer, and I think another track in between.

I fear even with more energetic production this would be disappointing. But 'A Branch in the River' with The Artist in the Ambulance's production would be stellar.
