not like The Albatross at all I agree but if u loved Dealer this def feels like an expansion of that sound, both figuratively and literally as it definitely sounds much BIGGER yknow

Dealer is quiet and somber. It’s much more tuned down and sounds elegant and lovely. This has one song on it that sounds remotely similar and that’s the title track. Sounds like Dealer mixed with Band of Horses. The majority of everything else isn’t even close. Dealer’s only real problem is that the whole thing can sound kinda samey, but the sound is nice. This is all over the place, and very few of the experiments actually work.
If anything Abatross is closer to Dealer than this is

What do you call jumping the shark when it actually works, because I think that's how I'd classify this thing. About three listens away from bumping this up .5, probably.

“Jumping the Shark”. Completely the perfect descriptor. I just hope they can come back from it. I’ll definitely be leery of upcoming releases from them.

I mean, Dealer was mature and elegant, no doubt about that, but it also comes across to me as somewhat...stale. Been there before. While entirely well-composed, it's unremarkable in a lot of ways.
This, this is brash, adventurous, courageous. It's got a much larger musical dick. The constraints are off. It's almost like Conor starting huffing paint in between Dealer and this, and generally, I just feel like eating whole "to share" bag of skittles, enough to make myself sick, and gassing myself in the car at the same time after I finish this album. Which is depressing, but skittles are colorful - and so is this. It remains flummoxing, in quite the delightful way.

I gotta say, I agree with everything Brushed has said. This is the biggest let down of the year. Not an expansion of their sound, imo, but a shoulder-dislocating reach.

Yeah it's frustrating when an "emo" band ends up proving to be actually competent songwriters outside of the genre

I respect that aspect about them but it’s the dudes singing I can’t get into. It works in some instances but overall it’s annoying to me.

I think I just have that problem with emo bands in general lol. Usually it grows on me though so I’ll keep giving this a go til it clicks.

I can understand someone not liking his falsetto vocals which is the hateable quality I was alluding to
