idk Tame Impala seem like the kind of group that might actually suck live, since so much of their sound involves studio trickery

you'd be surprised what modern psych bands are doing live nowadays to recreate/better that studio sound. saw a psych band this past weekend and they sounded wonderful, I bet Tame is even better

With this band in particular though live is a totally different prospect since (if I understand correctly) on the records it's basically just Kevin Parker and the rest of the band only play the stuff live. So like effectively when you see this band live you're not even actually seeing them but rather seeing Kevin Parker front a band who are covering his songs.

I guess you have to just give up any idea that you're going to get the same thing as what's on the record, which is fine really since what's the point of going to a live show if you're only hearing what you've already heard?

I mean they are his live band but they are still permanent members (2/4 members are the originals according to Wiki). so while Parker is the mastermind behind it all and probably writes nearly everything, discrediting the rest of the band like that is a bit unfair imo.

For what it's worth, here are the instrumental credits on all 3 albums (from Wikipedia):

Jay Watson – drums on "Solitude is Bliss", "The Bold Arrow of Time" and "Island Walking"; guitar on interlude after "The Bold Arrow of Time"

Tansie Bennetts – hand claps on "Lucidity"

Lonerism:

Kevin Parker – vocals and instrumentation on all tracks, except for:

Jay Watson – piano on "Apocalypse Dreams" and keys on "Elephant"

Melody Prochet – spoken voice on "Nothing That Has Happened So Far Has Been Anything We Could Control"

Currents:

Kevin Parker – all instruments and vocals, production, mixing, and engineering

huh didn't know he did everything for Currents. yeah I guess I was misinformed a bit but still having a really consistent live lineup means lots of practicing together/collective thinking on how to translate those songs live. as you would know live music is a whole different beast so getting that sound down is prob a group process

His live band is basically Pond from what I understand. All members from each band have crossed over into the other at some point or another I think.

Band is like pass the parcel, you can see it getting unwrapped and handed on to the next person. The excitement growing as you just know that when it comes to you you're getting the pressie. You eagerly tear away the wrapping but there's fuck all there except more wrapping, pass it on.
