This is so good. Surprised I've never listened to Steven Wilson before but will definitely be checking some of his other stuff now.

Skipping Perfect Life is certainly a choice, but I canāt imagine the record without it. Also, in hindsight, one of the bigger clues to the direction he would eventually take his solo output.
Zac, if you enjoy prog rock this guy is as good as it gets in the modern age. Legit the only person I view as a torchbearer for Floyd, King Crimson, and Yes. Total prick, and endlessly pretentious, but an absolute musical genius.

Total prick? Guy seems sound in the few interviews I've read.

I agree. This is another amazing work of this genius guy. But not necessarily my favourite.

Talked music with the drummer from 3, who is a family friend of a buddy of mine, and when I mentioned SW he just grimaced and said when they opened for him he outright ignored them when they told him they were fans. Didnāt say a word to them the rest of the time. Anecdotal evidence, sure, but sounds like a prick to me.

He is a musical genius from the table (as a producer) and from the stage (as a musician), but yeah, he has that british intellectual, holier than thou attitude. Yours is not the only account I have of him being a bit difficult to treat with. I think he is a very sensitive guy turned lowkey misanthrope, and I sympathyse with him to a certain degree, but it shouldn't result in behaving like that towards people who are being nice/polite.

Completely agree that this feels like a continuation of the classic 70s prog bands in the best way possible. This album for the most part sounds like a 50/50 mix between Pink Floyd and Rush. Like one of the riffs in 3 Years Older is very similar to the chorus of Circumstances.

After a more couple of listenings, I think I must swallow what I wrote few weeks ago. This is probably the pinnacle of Wilson's tremendous creative journey. At this moment I think I prefer it to The Raven That Refused To Sing. But both are two fantastic works, a perfect fusion between the classic and modern prog.

I'm always between this, Raven, and Grace depending on what you're looking for. Those 3 albums are basically on a spectrum of old to new prog, but they're each masterful in their respective approach. Grace for that more abstract slow burn dark jazzy prog with thick atmosphere, Raven has the technicality and a visceral sound while also being quite emotional throughout, and then HCE is the full package with newer prog elements and a fully fledged concept

Your comment was right and concise. I also agree that the three albums are very close in terms of quality and are his best. Maybe I tend to the last one because of what you said:
"HCE is the full package with newer prog elements and a fully fledged concept."
