But how though that type of comment is literally just fishing for something to criticize it for

Its clearly a humorous way of saying that it's safe, full of prog-isms and doesn't push the boat out

I've always thought the first 5 tracks on this were amazing but the last 4 fall off a lot.

Claims about artists “trying too hard” are so weird to me. It’s like you’re either uncharitably making assumptions about the artist’s goals and visions or you’re taking some weird, detached, “haha you care too much about a thing” approach to judging music. Very South Park-esque.

Errbady knows you can't set out to write a prog song/album. It has to happen totally accidentally or else it's shit.

Uh, "trying too hard" is like "this feels forced" and that's fine as a criticism tbh.

I really wanted to like this band more, but they'll always be in the "quite good" category for me

In the context of a passage or song? Sure. But when deployed as a sweeping statement about an artist’s intentions on an album? Not so much. I’m of the (rather recent tbh) opinion that you need evidence about their intentions or it sounds less like criticism and more like an uncharitable speculation about their headspace and goals. Which is fine, it’s just not how I prefer to critique music anymore.

Relating to what you mentioned Tundra, Mike Lessard recently put out some solo material that kinda (?) sounds like that. (Though, I would attribute it to being his own personal endeavors rather than TC's.)

I say "recently" in the loosest sense, lol. More like a month ago.

I...just don't get it. Several listens and this still just sounds really boring and samey. Glad you guys find something that I don't

I didn’t like this for years off release, but came around to it after a while. Clairvoyant puts me to sleep though.
