Looks like some folk need a little history lesson on progressive metal

Well, you have nothing constructive to add except for rambling about this album being "one song" (lol). But have fun on your high horse.
@Sab: Prog is a very vague term which makes it kinda useless as a genre name. But I see where you are coming from. Neue Regel is prog metal to my gut feeling, probably because of the complex vocal arrangements and the rhythmic oddness in its intro. Amazing song btw, one of their best (maybe even their best, idk).

Nothing constructive? Go through the threads over the last 7 years man. The one song comment was obviously an exaggeration, but that went over your head just like the history of progressive metal did. Was Queensryche not one of those bands during the early roots of prog metal that catapulted its success to garner more popularity? Was Mindcrime not the album to blow it through the roof? Where were you living man, it's knowledge 101 dude.
I'm not knocking anyone nor am I looking to piss anybody off, but to come on a mindcrime thread and suggest that this isn't progressive music is both ignorant and silly.
I'm actually shocked that you are even a part of this 'debate', because you do have a pretty extensive background when it comes to music.
Google 'best progressive metal album of all time' and tell me what you see. Better yet, tell how many links that this album doesn't pop up in when you search it.
Not on my high horse man, just a little too lazy to speak, I mean spread the word :D

I think you missed what I previously said: "It's not really progressive in today's understanding of the word", I never said it wasn't when it came out. Of course it pioneered it, but the definition has changed and this has nothing to do with Dream Theater/djent/whatever (mostly for the better). Just like Crimson Glory, this would be seen as heavy metal with power metal leanings and a few progressive touches if it was released today. This debate being a thing is proof enough that a shift of definitiom happened.

At least we can all agree Neue Regel is monstrous.

Yea, genres are social constructs anyway so they can change. Their utility lies in comparing stuff and finding similarities, but other than that they're not that important
Prog or not, thus rules ahrd

If we were to talk about albums that ushered in progressive metal as we know it, Perfect Symmetry and Control and Resistance were more responsible. However, I think that this band was a large part of what allowed that to happen as far back as The Warning with tracks like NM 156.

The way Neue Regel sounds like a machinery is the kind of creativity that gets me.

Drive nine hours to see Geoff Tate play this in full plus some empire or drive four to see Toddrcyhe play like three songs off this
decisions decisions

I'd go with Geoff tbh. it's not like he's redoing it in an Addicted to Chaos style or whatever, it should sound pretty faithful to the original even if it is a different band

Wildcard dude you're nuts for doing either of the two

I have to man. They’re one of my favorite bands and it’ll eat me up if I don’t see either of them.
And yeah I’m leaning towards Geoff, he probably sounds terrible but at least I’ll know the songs and I’ll be wasted so whatever

I'm really glad I made the drive for their 30 year anniversary. Did it suck hearing Dedicated to Chaos songs live? Sure. But I did get to hear Screaming in Digital / Real World / Damaged / NM156 / Empire at least, and those are some of my favorites not on Mindcrime. Geoff wasn't perfect, but they were still holding up the charade of a band, and that was a nice moment for me.

Man that’s shitty that they played that crap on a anniversary tour. Youd think they’d realize people wanna hear the old shit
Damaged is a really good tune tho and I think it’s super underrated

I'd say: If you want to hear this album in particular and are willing to accept a possibly clunky execution (and I'd honestly fear the instrumentalists more than the vocals) then go for Tate. If you want to hear tighter and varied (but, well, "Tate-less") rendition of Queensryche's classics then go see Wilton/Jackson, but do know that maybe my discourse is a bit tricky now because they have recently began to play a consistent number of Todd songs in their sets.
Also I believe I read that Tate wants to tour with the full Empire album soon, so you'll likely have chances to see both bands in a way or another.

Promised Land tour was their peak, from a live standpoint. At the time, didn't realize it would be downhill from there.

I'd have to go to Tate for full Empire. Seeing Della Brown would be something else, man.
