I was jamming this yesterday, really liked it for a few tracks (first couple were pretty sweet) & then got a little overwhelmed & didn't actually know what was happening... if I had to compare it to a previous experience I'd say it was like listening to Jane Doe for the first time (not stylistically but because I enjoyed it to an extent/for a period of a few tracks but then it was hard to sit through the whole thing & got a bit overwhelming). That worked out great in the end so I'm hopeful.
Not really used to this sort of thing so will take a bit of adjusting to. Very dense & the riffs in particular are so insane/intense.
Apologies, rambling about a load of nothing again...

Ehh, still this is honestly my least favourite of their first 4. It rules tremendously hard tho, except that poorly juxtaposed piano section.. which could have been executed A LOT better.

Love this album, probably my second favorite Gorguts.
Sunlight, it's definitely dense and will grow with more spins if you at least enjoyed the style of the first half. Very consistent album.

I thought I'd learnt not to listen "too hard" the first time but perhaps I was mistaken, think letting it wash over you on first attempt isn't always a bad thing - just helps bed the album in sometimes & then you know (sort of) what to expect the 2nd time.
It's got potential, anyway.

I don't really rate the value of first listens all that much anymore. First spin or two just lets me know if I want to come back to it, but I often check new things while working, which kind of makes this necessary.

Agreed. Well, actually depends how much attention i give it the first time around. Been jammin stuff lately with my full attention and usually have no issue rating it on the first jam in such cases

That's definitely the sensible way of approaching it, I can't understand people who can play something once & then make all their judgements immediately... unless its unbearably terrible of course.

There's just been too many cases where I didn't really get everything on the first listen or even just didn't like it. Then a few spins later and my opinion changed. Even when listening with full attention it's hard to digest something in one listen for me.

I find its pretty easy to tell on the first listen if something has enough substance to warrant further listens before judgement. I didn't rate Obscura for ages because i didnt get it the first time around. The other day I jammed Job for a Cowboys discog just for shits and giggles and well.. Stuff like is pretty surface level stuff and is pretty easy to asses on the first go unless your actually gonna write up on it, ya know?
|
| |
Yeah that's a bit different, I guess I haven't jammed something like that in a while.
I do agree that it's generally pretty easy to tell if something warrants further listens, but I don't generally feel like I can rate something after one listen.

Eh fair enough man

I can't really rate stuff on occasions even after many listens, lol. I think it's just my general reluctance to rate.

I usually rate after my first listen but it's usually just a placeholder so I can really tell what I want to listen to more
