Early Genesis has such sophisticated songwriting

Especially on this album. An underrated work. Probably the most simple, beautiful, savage and naive of all their discography.

They had a killer run in these times.

I had no idea Genesis used to make music like this man. I’m blown away.

Maaaaaaannnn. I'm ngl, Lamb is orders of magnitude better than this. I'm really trying with this album but it sounds noticeable weaker than their following 4.

I disagree. At least it's at the same level of their following 4.

I'm gonna give this a much fairer treatment soon. Trespass honestly took multiple plays to really sink in but now I think it's excellent. Prob just need to give this more time. No fkn chance I ever arrive at the conclusion that this is on par with Lamb tho. That is a totally singular album in my mind. A genre masterpiece of the highest order like Dark Side, Close to the Edge, Grace Under Pressure

boring is a bit harsh, but there is way too much filler and short tracks on lamb

Like Trespass, this is also a unique album too, but for different reasons, in this case probably due to the way it was written, the last work with Gabriel on board and probably with some tension between the members. I can see your point. But, I love the album despite some very short tracks that at times seem fillers but that make sense with the concept of the album.

Yeah, honestly, the short tracks just = world-building. Some of the best tracks are short (Fly, Cuckoo Caccoon, Hairless Heart, Anyway). I think it's incredible that the album is an hour and a half long but none of it feels like wasted space, and it all services the concept well. Also love the album art and promo material in general for that album. There's an absurd number of hits too-- t/t, In the Cage, NYC, Counting, Carpet Crawlers, 32 Doors, Lamia, Slipperman, It. Thinking Lamb is boring is just a skill issue 100% git gud.

Yeah Lamb is a total masterpiece and is an easy pick for their best imo. Like you said the world-building is incredible. I was never huge on the English fairy tale sort of thing so the fact that it completely steps away from that is another point in its favor.

I've given this another 4 listens, and yeah, idk. I rly dig the opening track, although I'll say I think the opening few mins hints at a better song than we end up getting. Time Table is like... almost great. It's def not a bad track; I just feel the chorus isn't doing enough. Get Em Out is too long for what it does. Can Utility is just straight up excellent. And Supper's Ready is peak 5/5 Genesis material. It's hard to rate since one track = half the album, and I think it's one of their best songs.
Even though no one track on Trespass can rival Supper's Ready, legit think I prefer the album as a whole to this. This is much better than I initially gave it credit for though.

Nursery Cryme is just better than both though. Hot takes!!!

Nursery Cryme is better yea, Trespass is kinda boring tho

I thought Trespass was dreadfully boring the first couple plays, was not expecting it to grow on me. It lacks the production polish and experimentation of their other albums and it basically has 1 mode but it does it very well imo. Looking For Someone, White Mountain, and The Knife are all top-tier Genesis for me.
