the remaster's fine, the remix makes the drums sound computerized in parts, most noticeably during the blast sections. The clarity also makes some mistakes(?) stick out, on Track 6 right at the beginning a few times you can hear him either miss the timing on a snare hit or double hit something, which sounds like something you hear on every bad programmed drum track.

You know this "one 40 minute death metal song" is going to be bad just from the very beginning. Immediately, you are slammed with a down tuned Korn riff reminiscent of later day Roadrunner Records angst rock, followed by a clean break that is made "heavy" by turning the distortion pedal on again in a manner eerily reminiscent of 2000s angst-y soft-heavy whine rock. It then goes back to that one Korn riff. This is not going to be a good album, but you throw in the Dan Swanö namesake and "progressive/forward thinking" marketing banter and you could fool the masses into believing this is the best thing since sliced bread.

I do think this is a tad bit overrated, but bitterman's review is something else. They make for good entertainment at the very least.

gonna dive into this band for the first time - I'm noticing a lot of remix albums from the past couple of years, should I stick with the originals or are the remixes better?

just go the originals, the remix/remasters are Swano mostly tinkering with things but not really any game-changing changes.

edit: except for the first album, Nothing But Death Remains; the remaster is way better than the original. That one actually needed it.

I think you could jam the remasters but hold off on the Remixes. Also be sure to check out Swanos other band Nightingale which has been receiving similar treatment. I’m holding out for a remaster and remix of Unorthodox bc that album could do with a face lift

yeah i most wanted an Unorthodox remix but he hasn't mentioned that one at all, or (as far as I know atm) if there's going to be another "phase" of these remasters either.
