sure he was responsible for some goofy crap too. he swung a few times and struck out and looked goofy a few, and hit a few amazing home runs (sorry for the baseball analogy I thought it fit best)

and yeah. I can comfortably say that without him in the band, I'm pretty sure that the albums I love so much from them would not mean nearly as much to me. that being said, I respect all the members and think that at their peak, they balanced each other out perfectly and contributed.

like you said, opinions

I fully agree regarding Waters' lyrical importance, however I do not offer support for the statement that he is "responsible for the best music, lyrics and direction they ever had". That just takes it too far. The good thing about Floyd was that, as a band, even during the tougher moments they channelled the disparity into creativity. Animals was the last album to do this before this one, which has a few areas which are just "ugh" for me.

Last half of the first disc is the best part

Agreed, but Hey You is the best song

maybe I'm not wording it right, saying that he's "responsible" because I did not mean he is solely responsible for that. but I believe he was the most important part of making their amazing albums amazing. imo.

Well, yeah, he was 25% of the band. I can't picture Floyd without Waters'. It just doesn't really work does it? It's a shame that it didn't stick, but I don't think we could ask for anything more of them. So many great moments.

Minus.

Yes Waters played a big role in the awesomeness of DSOTM, WYWH, Animals etc. but on this album his ego is too evident and his songwriting is sometimes very weak... when this album it rocks it goddamn rocks but it is so. Damn. Patchy.

I wouldn't quite say that. It's sooo bizzarre, yet sooooo important to many people, myself included.
