In the beginning i wasn't as a big a fan of Saturday Night Wrist as i was as White Pony and Around the Fur. I was used to the heavier sound, chugging guitar,and heavy yet colorful drumming. As time went on and my own musical tastes matured I soon came to list this album as my most favorite from the band. Cherry Waves and Xerces certainly are the most masterful songs of the album. Rats Rats Rats gave me the heavy screaming vocals and guitar riffs that I craved while at the same time humoring me. I interpreted Rats as kind of a joke. Like Stephen finally having his way and saying "OK I want to make a completely metal song... and it's going to sound ridiculous." lucky for us though Deftones couldn't sound ridiculous no matter how hard they tried.
I've noticed that they have received a lot of flack from interviewees about this album from comments that it lacked direction to it being too "new age" and unlike them. Chino is most definitely perturbed when he get this. Deftones fans know the time when this album was made was a real breaking point in their relationship. I think the songs can sometimes reflect this, but even at their worst- they seem to produce some of their best songs yet.

My favorite song is Cherry Waves ( the bass line is awesome). Hole in the Earth, Beware and Combat are runners up in my opinion. A beautiful dark melodic album.

I think everyone that likes this album just happened to show up at the same time because I felt the same way. Diamond Eyes and White Pony get talked about a lot more around here.
