I like the gallery. I just like TJR a decent bit more. People say the melodies are better on the Gallery but i just personally don't hear that. The riffs and melodies are more intricate but I feel like most of the time they're more intricate/meandering than memorable. There are some solid songs though. Silence and the firmament is probably my personal favorite

I think memorability is a definite indicator of good songwriting.

"It's just because the song structures have some unconventional changes really at times"
lol knew it

Yeah some bands do unconventional song structures really well. DT aren't one of them. They're much better when settling more typical song structures like on fiction and character

It usually sounds kinda amateurish on the Gallery. That has a charm to it but it still sounds kinda like a band finding themselves

I don't agree with that at all. Of most of their contemporaries in 1995, DT were probably the only band to not have completely abandoned elements of their prior sound in the melodic death metal sphere. Besides, they sure were doing more unconventional songwriting better than In Flames were doing conventional stuff considering the only songs of note on the entirety of TJR are the first two and Wayfaerer.

Wayfarer being the noteworthy song is certainly a take I didn't see coming lol. But hard disagree... dead eternity, lord hypnos, december flower, dead god in me are all every bit as good if not better than moonshield and artifacts. But willy is kinda summarizing my feelings better than I am. The songs often feel like different ideas that were forcefully jammed together on the Gallery

Going to see in flames tonight but... their setlist was way better the first half of the tour. I think it was because they were headlining the first half but it's like most of what they cut out was the good shit. They cut out stand ablaze, scorn, the hive, and jesters dance. And of all the songs to play from TJR... graveland? Lol I like the song but kind of a headscratching choice on that one

"On The Gallery they have a ripping opener, and then it regresses"
Horrendous take but OK.
"The songs often feel like different ideas that were forcefully jammed together on the Gallery"
If that's where you're going to dig your heels in on that one, then that's objectively a better form of songwriting than In Flames' after 1995. Their detrimental effect on the genre is pretty obvious if you're getting this filtered by The Gallery.

I am seeing In Flames too next month which is really exciting. But yeah, I hope they play a lot more of their older stuff than usual. I would kill to see Moonshield, The Hive or Resin live (Jester Script Transfigured would be the dream but that just is not going to happen). At least they play the best of their newer stuff and it will be exciting to hear stuff from Foregone being played live.

Well, in flames actually ruled last night. Anders was in his usual happy drunk form. Meshuggah was solid too but way too loud. Definitely an earplugs set
