That I agree with 100%.
Distilling their sound into such tight-sounding tracks is the biggest compliment I can give them on this album. I could do without the Incidentals, personally, but each song really has a personality and nothing feels like filler or half-assed.

my expectations were a lot closer to a 4.5 because i had concerns that going full-on with the aggressive sound would diminish its emotional value, but they straddled the line PERFECTLY

It might be controversial, but I feel like the Incidentals add much-needed respite and give the music breathing space. Incidentals II is particularly cool

Don't think it's controversial at all but I do think they're a mixed bag. Incidental II definitely doesn't feel like a respite. Especially when compared to the sort of respites on Sunbather. The Incidentals are where they really get weird with it. Admirable but I plan to just skip them on subsequent listens.

New records fine. Cute average.

Loved Incidental II. I think the album generally played it safe when it comes to being experimental, and the closure of Incidental II was THE experimental edge I needed from the album.

That transition from Incidental II into Revelator actually made my jaw hit the floor

It's very good Deafheaven but I'm not seeing how it's so transcendent that I'd call it AOTY
This hard.

"New records fine. Cute average."
Hopefully this isn't one of those "nothing new can have such a high average" ahh kind of comments.

The fact that it came out yesterday and y'all are already crowning it as their best (and by a large margin by some soundoffs) is absolutely nuts to me lol. I love you guys but the Sput hype is definitely making it seem better than it really is. All my opinion of course. Just think we gotta calm down with saying stuff is the best of all time when it hasn't even been officially out for 24 hours.

“That transition from Incidental II into Revelator actually made my jaw hit the floor”
yeah I take back what I said about the Incidentals, I still feel like they could’ve done more with III but I is harmless and I really fuck with II
Btw too hawks, my sound off just says it’s their best since Sunbather… I don’t think that’s unreasonable. I have no idea if I’ll end up thinking it’s their best (long shot tbh, I love this record sm) but this is absolutely better than Granite, OCHL, and New Bermuda.

Hawks tbf I'm hesitant to call it #1 Deafheaven just yet (my heart still lies with New Bermuda) but I am certain it will be high on my list at the end of the year if not #1

Hawks tbf there’s like 5-6 dudes saying it’s amazing, I wouldn’t call that hype

Reminds me of when people lost their minds over Children of the Moon on day one and I said everyone needed to chill out a bit. Turns out now I agree with them
