Honestly I was high on the hype when this came out and I really thought it was their best, but I think 2020 was just such a horrible fucking year that I was just so happy that something good came out of it. This has settled to being probably my third or fourth favorite tones. Hope we get new music this year

Wildcard thank you for telling me to close out my discog run with Ohms, this is my second favorite Deftones album now!

but also with how lackluster gore was

Glad you dug it emo! Yeah this is def home to some of my very favorite Deftones tracks. The middle is a little iffy but it starts strong and ends strong

I prefer Gore to this tbh... at least it tried to do something new and interesting with their established sound. I enjoy Ohms, but it still comes off as a tired, predictable retread of their previous work; almost as if they felt boxed in by the reception of Gore to make something much safer
This and Adrenaline are my least favorite Deftones albums (though to be fair, having their worst albums at a 3.5 is pretty damn impressive, and goes to show how fantastic their discog is)

I remember liking this, but it’s been a couple years since I listened to it

This record is anything but “tired” Lol
Predictable I understand but tired is just not even thinking

Yeah the performances here don’t sound uninspired at all to me. It really sounds like a bunch of their records jammed together to me. And the title track doesn’t really sound like anything they’ve done imo

Definitely a tired retread. The hooks are bland, the intensity isn’t there, the screams in tracks like Genesis are total shit — rly the only thing the album has is the atmosphere. Tracks taper off in a very boring way too, like the finger snaps at the end of Mathematics, or the bland ambience that for some reason makes up almost half of Pompeji’s runtime. Title track and Link are keepers, otherwise worst hit to miss ratio in their entire discography. Currently working on a review

You basically said all you need to say right there my guy it doesn’t need to be e expanded upon lol

Nah I've got a lot more to say than that lol. Besides, album is due for a different take. Listening to DE and this back-to-back rly cements how lacklustre this is.

I mean fair enough. All I’ll say is they used the ambient part of Pompeji as a lead in to their encore at MSG. White lights and cell phone lights filled the arena and it made me tear up. Such an amazing show.

I actually think Mathematics and Pompeji are two of the better songs on the album, but they both meander off into a nothing-sandwich in their latter halves. I'm sure I could enjoy it in a live setting, but not so much on this album.

I see what you mean honestly but I don’t think it’s a retread per se
I can see the vocals maybe not selling you allt the way and the song structures and energy matching but I think it’s all well-done. Them approaching this as they are older and me listening to it as I was older kinda matched the older energy of Deftones.

Anything but "tired". Steph in particular, seems invigorated as anything I've heard from him (he was pretty much asleep on the one before this).
I don't think this collection of songs are their best, but they definitely came with intent on this record.
