tbf tho hip hop shows are often pretty mediocre in general.

I take recs pretty seriously if I start a list, some of my favourite recent albums I've listened to have come from recommendations I've asked for.
The year-vs-year series of lists I've put up on each one I think there are at least a few albums no one here has really heard of and another couple no one champions on the site. Then the recs in getting are pretty diverse and some are quite obscure too. Works for me but you have to put the effort in both sides (discovering stuff yourself, actually listening to recs from other people in full)

Honestly I'm pretty terrible with recs in general, most of the time I just end up putting them into my mental list of stuff I'll eventually check rather than checking it out at the time it's recommended to me.

I used to do that but I would always have the habit of barely forgetting a couple. Like I would remember most of the recs except for one or two and it would always kill me. I started keeping a log of them in RYM. helps a lot

this is where rateyourmusic becomes useful for once. you can just slap albums that interest you in a list or tag them. if you put it in a list, you can add descriptions for genre names and what your listening priority is.
