"But I still ask myself Ryu, how can you dislike this and love early stuff ? For me it just make no sense at all because musically or lyrically it is not that far away ? I know music is subjective, but maybe I just brain myself out all the time ?"

nah this was def a pretty sizable departure from his first three imo. he got way more conceptual and inward-looking here. also dropped all the cloud rap stylings of his earlier work and was def gunning for a bit broader appeal (this is also not so far off the heels of the ultimate water bottle flip meme sensation). i'd pretty much describe the first 2/3s of this as pop rap. then on the last third kinda hopped on the trap metal wave that at this point had already blown over.

looking back it kinda surprises me this is widely considered "the" denzel album when it's such an identity crisis. feels like a weird conglomeration of stuff that had popped off the previous 18 months (atrocity exhibition, damn, xxxtentacion, jpegmafia). there's certainly songs i like here but as a full listen its a bit of a mess.

i don't think its a coincidence either that he released zuu as a palette cleanser not even 12 months later and has not at all returned to what he was doing here. even if i'm similarly not as hot on MME that one at least feels a lot more authentically denzel to me

he always releases palette-cleansers after his serious projects. I love when he gets introspective, part of the reason why I like Melt so much. When he gets silly I kind of tune out

I know people clown (hah) on Clout Cobain but it was such a great track and music video. So many good lines, so oppressively dark and hopeless. You almost feel sunken in a tar pit when that black balloon finally pops at the end. One of the darkest most blunt hip-hop tracks I've ever heard. Absolutely no sugar-coating whatsoever

Just snagged this on vinyl last week, easily my favourite album of his. This was the first project his more RnB songwriting vibes were on display, and I’d argue his best in regards to that side of him, while also having some of his hardest songs on the flip. Best Z by a mile

I want to 5 this so bad because it had such a big effect on me but a few of the tracks are just kind of there. But the highs on this are very high. I kind of want him to go this dark again but I don't really expect it anymore.

Congrats on the vinyl snag. Probably everyone already heard this, but I think it's absolute blasphemy this wasn't included on the album...

I don't mind Zuu, I think it is definitely weaker than the rest of his discography but there are a few really good tracks.

5'd. Been listening to this a lot lately. Definitely his best album.

Sad how accurate the lyrics to Sirens are to the current political landscape in the US. It's like nothing changed.
