so sad when one of your favorite bands gets so average that you even forget they released a new album recently :[

Even if you don't necessrily dig the new material, you have to admit that they're still a fun live act. They just announced a joint headlining performance with Gojira at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado. I'm thinking that'll be worth catching.

I think that the actual fanboys are the ones that bash current Opeth. They are so fixed on the previous style that can't appreciate the new one. Of course I'm not referring to anyone who happens not to like it, just to the overly disappointed that Mike won't growl again and that this is an utter disgrace to their catalogue.

I agree. Blackwater Park was my first Opeth but I've never been super huge on the band. Still Life and Ghost Reveries are my favourite Opeth releases but I still love their current sound.

I mean why is he swearing? People should be glad they like this album, but that's apparently not good enough.
I like PC over this, but mostly I think they just make better music when they m/.

The old songs that weren't m/ were better than most stuff on the last albums too though. Got nothing to do with their change in sound, but with their change in song-writing.
Still like this though.

"I mean why is he swearing?"
I didn't read it as aggressive at all so idk why bad words are suddenly a problem.

eh yes and no. I wouldn't bash on their new style as much if the songs flowed better. they used to be the kings of transitions, now the majority of their material is just a mess. sure you could point to orchid and morningrise as just a bunch of riffs but at least those riffs were actually great. most of the stuff here is like eh

I mean if they're doing what they wanna do more power to them. It's not like they owe me anything so they can do whatever they want but I'm certainly not going to buy their product.

Poorer composition wasn't so much a problem on Heritage but it became a serious hindrance on PC and this especially. The style is fine but these songs are just not very well constructed.

"I mean if they're doing what they wanna do more power to them. It's not like they owe me anything so they can do whatever they want"
exactly. I won't harp on them for doing what they're doing, I'll just listen and accept it and move on. but a small part of me does pine for a return to the glory days as they were just that fucking good

I think an artist in particular is often very blind to the quality of his own work. They see it from a very different perspective, and especially on this one I get the feel that Akerfeldt just took everything he liked and threw it together, thinking it would work out well.

i don't think this is any better or worse than the last few records tbh

for me this is obviously better than PC, but even more apparent that this lacks on comparison to Heritage.
