YEah I'm not really feeling the new one all that much yet, hopefully it grows on me but eh.

Wake Up is fine. Stay with Me is gorgeous. I think Whistleblower is the weakest track here, but it still bangs.

The chorus on Wake Up is pretty useless, and I'm not crazy about Stay With Me either. Whistleblower is ok but not one of my favorites. Palms pretty much goes full-on generic mainstream rock unfortunately, with maybe three songs as exceptions.

^ It's a little more than three songs for me, probably half of the album is generic as fuuuuuuck and the other half is along the lines of what I wish they were actually doing as a band

Okay those of you that have heard the leak, which songs are generic and which are great.

The band has been on a steady decline this whole decade, seems that they want to chase the success and popularity more than grow artistically. I can't blame them cause I'd probably do they same thing if I was in a moderately popular band, especially around age 40, but doesn't mean it still isn't disappointing given how ambitious and experimental they were in the mid-late 2000s. The lyrical themes are also being recycled and get pretty contrived on the new one.

My Soul, A Branch in the River, Blood on Blood and Beyond the Pines are the best tracks. Blood on Blood is genuinely one of the best songs they've written in a very long time and should be the direction they are actually following instead of this half assed chase towards mainstream success. The good tracks have a very Alchemy Index/Beggars vibe mixed with some Radiohead-esque qualities and it just works so well and show that the band is still capable of pushing forward.
The other songs are a collection of incohesive tracks all trying to fill a generic radio rock slot and they range from inoffensive to downright fucking horrible. Hold Up A Light is hands down one of the worst tracks Thrice has ever written and it's very rare that I will call a Thrice song "bad", but that song is irredeemably awful to a baffling degree. This creates a dissonance within the album where it shifts between tracks that truly feel artistically creative and those that feel like a band on auto pilot just trying to appease any casual music fan who might be discovering the band for the first time.

Hold Up a Light isn't terrible, it's just kind of tedious and sounds contrived to me. It reminds me of Wake Up with just yelling the song name over and over again in the chorus. Why does this band think it's ok to still do that at this point, I thought the music world was past that.
Even the stronger tracks on Palms don't measure up to their best stuff from the '00s imo, but that is a high standard and they're still great songs. It's a solid album for sure (aside from Everything Belongs and Light), like the three singles are very good modern rock songs.

I am completely and utterly baffled that people think the new one is more generic than this

Both are pretty generic but this is more diverse and emotional to me. The Long Defeat/Seneca and Death From Above are two of their most memorable songs. Hurricane is also one of their best openers.

I don't mind Everything Belongs. It has qualities I hate but it's like the bare bones of what could have been a really good song had they put effort into it. Hold Up A Light has no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

Ashtiel, definitely check Beggars next, that's probably their best. Haven't heard the new one yet but I'm tempted to download it.
