I bought this album upon release, listened to it once, wasn’t impressed on first listen, and then shelved it. Came back to it about two weeks ago, glad I did, it’s tremendous!

Yeah, from my experience, Katatonia don't seem to impress on first listen. I suggested this album to a friend and he found it blant, until Takeover started playing on shuffle on YT.

I can see a case for being similar to NITND but to my ears this has the most exciting and variegated structures since the harsh vox days, it's so weird to see it dismissed as a more of the same. Especially when DEK is generally praised even though it just took NITND and made it safer.

Keeping in mind they almost called it quits, I'm tempted to suggest they needed this shift in style. The streak from Viva Emptiness to The Fall of Hearts was stellar, but I'd understand if they got tired of their formula.
