RIP to a legend.
Sly, BW, they say these things always happen in threes. If it ends up being Clint Eastwood, I think I'm actually going to cry.

the unreleased (at the time, a version of it came out officially in 2011) smile album is probably a good next step. more ambitious and psychedelic, with songs composed in like 16 bar passages and then strung together as suites
next maybe go backwards a bit to today and summer days and summer nights to see how they got from the surf and car songs over to what theyre doing here. today is especially a gem of an album
or you could jump right to their early 70s stuff which is my favorite material by this band (outside of this album). tbh i like sunflower more than this, and surfs up and holland are not too far behind either. throughout their early 70s run brian gets a lot less involved and its up to carl and dennis to kind of pick up the slack but they were both also brilliant in their own ways. dennis's only solo album is legendary
the stuff between smile and sunflower is pretty weird but its endearing and all done at home so its got this intimate charm that rare to find in the rest of their discog. imo friends is the best of those albums by a mile
some people are really big on the album love you but honestly for a first time dive i would pretend their discog just ends at 1973 for now lmao

The production on this one really puts it over the top for me. Such a uniquely 60s sound imo. Can't wait to dive into the others.
