Even as someone that often prefers more avant-garde things (esp. when it comes to metal), I think this is head & shoulders above III. It's commanding, it's relentless, and it's nearly flawlessly executed. And the fact that it isn't as outré as, e.g., III or something like OBSCURA or Kayo Dot or whatever makes it more easily digestible, or at least more ubiquitous. Like, even though I absolutely love them, I have to be "in the mood" to want to listen to OBSCURA or SADNESS WILL PREVAIL. This, on the other hand? It's always appropriate to jam this.

this would be any other band's magnum opus but III tops it ever so slightly imo

"Idk what this one was missing but the 2nd LP is just more MORE, idk."

I prefer III for being such a completely singular experience, the production is absolutely flawless (possibly peak DM) and although it isn't an everyday listen, it gets plenty of run for just being so damn unique that there isn't really anything else to reach for in its stead. It's close enough mind because this is a fantastic example of the genre also, just that it feels slightly more erm "definable" (could be seen as a good thing).

I'm always mildly surprised you don't prefer III tect for the "avant" reason you stated.

P.S. Nice dig.

2027 would be reasonable, considering they have to design and manufacture new instruments, devise an original tuning, write a new genre-breaking musical theory and concept for the next album. Perhaps build a quantum computer to revolutionise digital production techniques, also.

Although I wouldn't say this is "head & shoulders" above III, they're both damn near flawless

Not head and shoulders, but a tad better. Doesn't matter. Both kill hard.

They're both excellent albums but I can't help but think they aren't 5's.
