Korn felt like such a big part of my childhood - like not necessarily mine personally (though I did really like ISSUES for a bit), but just in general. They were all over the "alt rock" radio stations of the time, they were one of the few "edgier" bands to regularly appear on TRL (and MTV in general) which was basically an after-school staple. I'm surprised I was never more grabbed my them in my youth. Admittedly I preferred Limp Bizkit (and even Linkin Park) during those days and I'm sure that says a lot more about me than it does about Korn.

Just bc this was popular doesn’t mean it was bad. This was definitely one of the heaviest things to ever get that sort of mainstream attention, and it damn well shouldve.

Unironically, Mudvayne and Korn should be congratulated for putting so much emphasis on the bass guitar in their music. It adds so much dimensionality and I cannot for the life of me understand why bassists are buried in modern metal mixes.

It’s hard not to notice because Fieldy’s bass playing was so low action that it sounds like he’s slapping a loose string against his fret board. It’s certainly unique but in practice I would say it’s very one dimensional if anything. He certainly knows how to play bass normally, Porno Creep on Life is Peachy is an example.

Fieldy is a percussionist, not a bassist!

And in that role he's very effective.

If you think about it a bassist is a percussionist cuz they slap the shit outta the bass

Again it was unique and it set Korn apart from other bands at the time. The only other band that attempted to replicate that sound was Coal Chamber’s first CD. I can imagine there were others that tried but producers I’m sure weren’t very high on it.

Oh yeah it's very evident that them strings are practically sagging on the fret board but that's the dimensionality I'm talking about. Sure, 30 years and a dozen albums later it becomes rote, but for its time and even going back to it right now, it's super refreshing to hear an oft-forgotten instrument be used so prominently. Really dig how Davis delivers his scatting and lyrics in a matching cadence with the bass and drums at times. Good shit. Never listened to this before actually.

bass + drums is called the rhythm section and Fieldy is here to stress that point

I definitely think David’s drumming carried a lot of Korn’s early releases. That groovy jazz style he brought wasn’t really found in a lot of metal bands at the time. If you want good bass-heavy nu-metal then yeah Mudvayne’s first album or Incubus’s SCIENCE would be my suggestion.
